Tashaun Stockdale (Poplar, SC) scored on a follow shot with eight seconds left to lift Saint Augustine's University over crosstown rival Shaw University 51-49 in a CIAA men's basketball game at jam-packed Emery Gymnasium on Saturday, January 25, 2014.
A jumper by junior guard
Amere May (South Haven, MI), who was closely guarded by a Shaw defender, fell short of the rim, but Stockdale caught the ball in the air and scored on a layup. His basket gave the Falcons their only lead of the game.
"I had set a screen for [May] on a pick-and-roll," Stockdale said. "I was getting in position for a rebound when I saw the ball was tipped. I followed the flight of the ball and just put it in the basket."
The putback capped a 6-0 run for the Falcons, who trailed 49-45 with 2:51 left. The Bears led by as many as nine points in the second half before the Falcons began their comeback.
"We are just one of those resilient teams," Sheals said. "What I like about our guys is they never quit. They are a team to be proud of because of the effort they give."
The Falcons won despite shooting 26 percent from the floor including 0 of 10 beyond the three-point arc. But they connected on 27 of 37 free throws which helped them rally from a nine-point second-half deficit. The Falcons hit 15 of 19 free throws in the second half.
First-year St. Aug Head Coach Tony Sheals gained his first victory against Shaw. The win also snapped a two-game home losing streak to the Bears. The Falcons are 6-3 against their rivals in the last nine games at Emery Gymnasium. It was the first CIAA Southern Division win for the Falcons (1-2 Southern Division, 4-4 CIAA, 11-7 overall).

The Bears stretch their lead to four at 49-45 with less than three minutes left before the Falcons made their final run. Stockdale started the run with a dunk and Crawley added two free throws with 1:34 remaining to tie the game at 49-49.
A turnover by Shaw's Aquil Younger set the stage for Stockdale's basket. May's shot was tipped by Richardson before Stockdale grabbed the ball in mid-air and flipped it in the bucket. The Bears had one last chance but the shot hit the side of the backoard and the game ended.
Derrick Hunter scored 16 points for the Bears (0-3 Southern Division, 4-5 CIAA, 6-13 overall), who remained winless in the Southern Division. Joe Reid added 10 points before fouling out. The Bears outscored the Falcons 28-18 in the paint but shot 32 percent for the game and committed 17 turnovers. They were 12 of 19 from the free throw line.
Both teams were ice cold from the floor from the start. The score was 12-6 Shaw past the midway point of the first half. The Falcons finally scored in double digits at the seven-minute mark. Kindred scored on a free throw to trim the Bears' lead to 16-10.
The Bears built a 20-10 lead but the Falcons pulled within striking distance with a late first-half run. The Falcons outscored the Bears 12-5 in the final 5:25 to creep within 25-22 at halftime.
