RALEIGH, N.C. – After a six-day break, Saint Augustine's University will host Fayetteville State University in a CIAA men's and women's basketball doubleheader at Emery Gymnasium on Saturday, February 1, 2014. The women's game begins at 2 p.m. followed by the men's contest at 4 p.m.
Tickets are $12 for general admission. The cost is $8 for children ages 6 to 12, visiting students with valid ID, faculty and staff, and military personnel. St. Aug students with valid ID get in free as well as children ages 5 and under. Seating is limited and on a first-come, first-serve basis.
WAUG-TV will televise the basketball doubleheader on Time Warner Cable 168 in Raleigh, N.C. WAUG is a television and radio station owned and operated by Saint Augustine's University.
Both the Falcons and Lady Falcons haven't played since last Saturday when they hosted the Shaw University men's and women's teams inside a jam-packed Emery Gymnasium. The Falcons won 51-49 in the men's game against their crosstown rival on a game-winning follow shot by junior guard
Tashaun Stockdale (Poplar, S.C.). The Lady Falcons played the Lady Bears even until late in a 67-56 defeat.
St. Aug was scheduled to visit Livingstone College on Wednesday, January 29, 2014, but the game was cancelled because of a winter storm. The doubleheader was rescheduled for Monday, February 3, 2014, at New Trent Gymnasium in Salisbury, N.C., with games starting at 5:30 (women) and 7:30 (men).
The victory over Shaw was the first Southern Division win for the Falcons (1-2 Southern Division, 4-4 CIAA, 11-7 overall). They host a Fayetteville State squad (2-1 Southern Division, 6-3 CIAA, 13-6 overall) in a four-way tie for first place in the division.
The trio of junior guard
Amere May (South Haven, MI), senior guard-forward
Joel Kindred (Raleigh, NC) and senior center Jon Crawley (Richmond, VA) will attempt to lead the Falcons to their second straight CIAA divisional victory. May leads the team in scoring (19.2) and Kindred is second (14.8). Crawley averages 12 points, 8.2 rebounds and a league-high 2.2 blocks. Crawley also leads the conference in field goal percentage (60.3) for the Falcons, who ranked third in the CIAA in scoring (79.1).
The Broncos are sparked by the frontcourt of senior forward Tyrell Tate and junior forward Torian Showers. Tate paces the Broncos with an 18.6 scoring average and Showers scores at 10.1 points per game. Freshman guard Joshua Dawson provides balance in the backcourt with 9.5 points, 5.1 assists and 1.8 steals. Dawson leads the CIAA in assists for the Broncos, who rank second in the league in scoring (80.4).
The Lady Falcons (1-2 Southern Division, 5-3 CIAA, 10-7 overall) will rely on the sophomore backcourt of
Regime McCombs (Greenville, SC) and
Porscha Walton (Chesterfield, VA) and the inside play of sophomore
Terri Jacobs (McDonough, GA). McCombs averages 12.8 points on 37 percent three-point shooting and Walton averages 9.8 points, 3.4 assists, 4.2 rebounds and 2 steals. Jacobs, a forward, averages 9.5 points and 8.8 rebounds for the Lady Falcons, who are among the league scoring leaders in conference games (64.0).
The Lady Falcons will host a Lady Broncos squad (3-0 Southern Division, 7-2 CIAA, 14-4 overall) which is unbeaten and tied for first in the Southern Division. The Lady Broncos are led by the scoring and rebounding of junior center Daja Middleton, who averages 13.1 points and a conference-best 11.2 rebounds. Senior guard Amber Calvin sparks the Lady Broncos with a 14.8 scoring average and senior guard Akysia Resper averages 8.7 points and 3.7 assists for the Lady Broncos, who lead the CIAA in fewest points allowed (54.1).
