Falcons Erase 21-Point Deficit To Edge ECSU In OT

Box Score RALEIGH, NC – Senior guard Joel Kindred (Raleigh, NC) scored 19 points including one of three free throws with 0.3 seconds remaining in overtime as Saint Augustine's University came back from a 21-point second-half deficit to slip past Elizabeth City State University 77-74 at Emery Gymnasium for its sixth straight men's basketball victory on Saturday, January 4, 2014.

"It is great to come from behind for a win in our first CIAA game," St. Aug Head Coach Tony Sheals said. "We were a little rattled early, but our guys showed guts and pride. That's the type of team we hope to be throughout the year."

Senior center Jon Crawley (Richmond, VA) had 17 points and four blocks and junior guard Amere May (South Haven, MI) scored 15 points including two free throws to seal the win for the Falcons (8-3 overall) in their CIAA season opener.

Kindred and May combined to make three consecutive free throws with under a second left in overtime after the Vikings were whistled for a disconcertion violation at the free throw line and a technical foul following the violation.

The violation was called after Kindred went to the free throw line after drawing a blocking foul on the Vikings. He missed both free throws, but the violation was called during the second free throw. According to the NCAA Rule Book, no opponent shall disconcert (e.g. taunt, bait, gesture or delay) the free throw shooter.

Kindred was awarded a third free throw attempt and the senior made it to give the Falcons a 75-74 lead. May knocked down both technical foul shots for the final three-point margin.

"[The official] did a good job on the decision of the play," Sheals said. "Whether it is St. Aug or ECSU, the rule says you can't talk to the player anymore when the player is shooting free throws. You can't wave at them, you can't wave your hands and you can't make comments. In the old days you could. Now it is a violation just like stepping over the line. If it was our team, it would have been the same call."

Victory seemed improbable for the Falcons when they trailed 57-36 with 10 minutes remaining, but they mounted a furious rally to send the game into overtime. A big block by Crawley, the CIAA blocks leader, led to a Kindred layup for a 64-62 lead with 29 seconds left in regulation. The layup capped a 28-5 surge including 14 consecutive points by the Falcons.

"We told our guys to get it under 10 by the eight-minute mark and the pressure will get to the other team," Sheals said. "That's what we were able to do."

St. Aug held a 65-63 lead in regulation, but Miykiel Falcon of the Vikings buried a jumper with two seconds left to tie the game and send it into overtime.

"[The officials] called the last shot a two, but [ECSU] thought it was a three," Sheals said. "I thought it was a two the whole time. When [Falcon] shot faked our guy, he stepped over the line. It was a good call. The officials did their job and that's what it's about - getting the correct call whether it's for St. Aug or ECSU. They made the right call."

In the extra session, freshman guard Anthony Gaskins (Greenville, NC) drilled back-to-back three-pointers for a 73-69 St. Aug lead with two minutes left.

The Vikings re-took the lead at 74-73 with a minute left, but Kindred made one of two free throws to tie the game with 39 seconds left. The Vikings tried to set up for the last shot, but junior forward Tashaun Stockdale (Poplar, SC) came up with a key steal which led to the dramatic finish for the Falcons, who outscored the Vikings 12-9 in overtime.

Defense keyed the Falcons' rally. The Falcons held the Vikings to 35 percent shooting in the second half while hitting a remarkable 68 percent. The Falcons outscored the Vikings 40-26 in the second half after trailing 39-25 in the first half.

Sophomore forward Daniel Clark (Danville, VA) added seven points, nine rebounds and three steals for the Falcons, who shot 54 percent for the contest. Both Gaskins and Stockdale added six points apiece. For the Vikings, Dominique Byrd led the way with 20 points followed by Glenn Patterson with 12.

The Falcons are back in action Monday, January 6, 2013 when they host Chowan University at Emery Gymnasium at 7:30 p.m. The Falcons will then hit the road for five straight CIAA contests.
