RALEIGH, N.C. – The Saint Augustine's University men's and women's basketball teams will be looking to extend their win streaks on Monday, January 6, 2014, when they host the Chowan University men's and women's teams in a CIAA doubleheader at Emery Gymnasium. Game time is 5:30 p.m. for the women and 7:30 p.m. for the men.
Tickets are $12 for general admission and $8 for visiting college students with valid ID, faculty and staff, military personnel with valid ID and children ages 6-12. St. Aug students with valid ID and children ages 5 and under are admitted free.
The Falcons (1-0 CIAA, 8-3 overall) edged Elizabeth City State University 77-74 in overtime for their sixth straight victory on Saturday, January 4. It is the Falcons' longest streak since they won six in a row last season. If the Falcons win Monday, it would be the most consecutive wins since the 2009-10 season when they built a 12-game win streak.
The Lady Falcons (1-0 CIAA, 6-4 overall) beat Elizabeth City State 67-57 on Saturday for their fourth straight win. It is their longest victory stretch since they reeled off five consecutive wins during the 2011-12 season.
This is the second CIAA contest for the Falcons and Lady Falcons after both teams won their conference openers at home on Saturday. The Falcons erased a 21-point second-half deficit in their victory over ECSU. Senior guard-forward
Joel Kindred (Raleigh, NC) and junior guard
Amere May (South Haven, MI) combined to hit three straight free throws in overtime for the win. Kindred paced the Falcons with 19 points, senior center Jon Crawley (Richmond, VA) added 17 points and May scored 15.
The Lady Falcons won going away after trailing in the second half. Sophomore guard Porscha Walton (Chesterfield, VA) posted her first career double-double with 15 points and a career-high 11 rebounds in addition to five assists. Junior forward Brittany Allen (Jamaica Queens, NY) added a career-high 11 rebounds and sophomore guard Regime McCombs (Greenville, SC) had nine points and eight rebounds.
May leads the CIAA men in scoring (21.1 ppg) and Crawley is the league's blocks leader (2.7 bpg). Both Crawley (65 percent) and sophomore forward
Daniel Clark (Danville, VA) (65.1 percent) are third and second, respectively in field goal percentage for Falcons, who are the CIAA second-highest scoring team (86.4 ppg). Crawley ranks fourth in rebounding (8.5 rpg) for the league's top rebounding squad. Kindred is scoring at 16.3 points a clip.
McCombs is second among CIAA women in three-point field goal percentage (42.5 percent) and Walton is third in assists (4.1). The Lady Falcons rank third in the conference in three-point field goal percentage (31.1 percent). McCombs leads the team in scoring (13.0 ppg) and sophomore center Terri Jacobs is the team's rebounding leader (7.7 rpg).
The Falcons face the Chowan men for the second time this season. Both teams played in a non-conference tilt last month with the Falcons winning 72-67 at Chowan. The Hawks (4-6 overall) have lost their first two CIAA games including an 80-57 road loss to Shaw University on Saturday. Senior forward Ashante Ross leads the Hawks in scoring (15.3 ppg) and junior forward Phoenix Butler-Poole is the team's leader on the boards (7.8 rpg) in addition to averaging nearly 15 points for the Hawks, who lead the CIAA in free throw shooting (75.3 percent).
On the women's side, the Hawks (7-5 overall) defeated powerhouse Shaw University 69-64 on the road on Saturday. The win was the first in school history against the Lady Bears. The win evened the Hawks' conference mark after two games.
The Hawks are led by the inside tandem of sophomore forward Alisha Mobley and junior forward Summer Curtis. Mobley averages 14.6 points on 50.8 percent shooting which is fourth-best in the CIAA. Curtis, who stands 6-foot-3, is third in the CIAA with 2.3 blocks per game. Chowan is second in the CIAA in blocks (5.1 bpg).
