The Falcons (2-0 CIAA, 9-3 overall) have won their last seven men's games. It is the most since the 2009-2010 squad ran off 12 straight wins during its CIAA Title run.
The Falcons have been sensational during the streak. Head Coach Tony Sheals knows his team has to perform at an even higher level to continue their momentum. They have fared well in away games, winning three of four.
"What we want to do on the road is rebound, defend and not turn the ball over," Sheals said. "We have to make free throws. That is a must."
The Falcons are led by junior guard
Amere May (South Haven, MI), the CIAA scoring leader. May, named CIAA Co-Newcomer of the Week on Tuesday, January 7, averages 21.6 points a game.
Ten players average 11 or more minutes for the Falcons, and seven players average six or more points. Senior guard-forward
Joel Kindred (Raleigh, NC) averages 16 points and 7.3 rebounds and senior center Jon Crawley (Richmond, VA) averages 13.2 points and 8.1 rebounds in addition to a league-leading 2.5 blocks per game.
The Bulldogs are 6-8 overall and 0-3 in the CIAA with their three league losses coming on the road. The contest against the Falcons will be their first league home opener.
Senior guard Ray Gatling, a key player on last season's CIAA championship team, leads the Bulldogs with an 18.5 scoring average. Six players on the Bowie State roster are either 6-foot-7 or 6-foot-8. The Falcons have three players taller than 6-foot-7 – the 6-9 Crawley, 6-foot-9 sophomore forward
Daniel Clark (Danville, VA) and 6-foot-11 senior center
Aru Kok (Perth, Australia).
The Lady Falcons (2-0 CIAA, 7-4 overall) have reeled off five consecutive wins and appear to be peaking. A win over Bowie State would be the longest win streak since the 2009-10 season.
Head Coach
Rachel Bullard admits that three conference games in five days will be tough, but the Lady Falcons will be ready to compete.
"Bowie State is good, Lincoln is good and Virginia Union is good," Bullard said. "But our girls are looking forward to the challenge."
Nine players average four or more points for the Lady Falcons. Sophomore guard
Regime McCombs (Greenville, SC) is the leading scorer with a 12.3 average, and sophomore forward
Terri Jacobs (McDonough, GA) averages 10.5 points and a team-high 7.6 rebounds. Point guard
Porscha Walton (Chesterfield, VA) records nearly 10 points, four assists, 4.5 rebounds and 2.5 steals a game. Nine Lady Falcons play 11 or more minutes per contest.
The Lady Bulldogs, 6-5 overall and 1-2 in the CIAA, are playing their first league contest at home. Junior guard Ashley Castle leads the team with a 13.2 scoring average and junior guard-forward Denver Clyde averages 12.6 points and nearly eight rebounds. Their roster includes 10 upperclassmen and three graduate players while the Lady Falcons have seven underclassmen including five sophomores.
