Box Score LYNCHBURG, Va. – Guard Anthony Gaskins (So./Greenville, NC) registered a double-double of 21 points and 11 rebounds as Saint Augustine's University relied on its free throw shooting to pull out a 74-70 non-conference men's basketball win over Virginia University of Lynchburg at the Lynchburg City Armory on Saturday, December 13, 2014.
The Falcons (4-4 overall) prevailed at the free throw line, where they made 26 of 39 at the charity stripe compared to 5 of 11 for the Dragons. In the last five minutes, the Falcons made 13 of 15 free throws.
Forward Damarian Henderson (Fr./Goldsboro, NC) added 12 points and forward Tashaun Stockdale (Sr./Poplar, SC) added nine points in his season debut for the Falcons. Guard Keith Crawford (Jr./Richmond, VA) and forward Quincy January (Fr./Atlanta, GA) each added eight points and January pulled down seven rebounds.
The victory was the second in a row and the fourth in five games for the Falcons. Virginia-Lynchburg dropped to 1-11 overall.
The Falcons played Virginia-Lynchburg in their last two contests. The rematch was much closer than the first meeting, an 83-59 win by the Falcons on December 6 in Raleigh, N.C. On Saturday, the Falcons never led by more than seven points until the five-minute mark of the second half.
The Dragons led 42-39 with 13:36 left, but the Falcons took the lead for good at 44-42 when January scored on a dunk and free throw, and forward Nick Moyer (Jr./Martinsville, VA) scored a layup off a steal by guard John Koger (Sr./Greensboro, NC).
A jumper by Gaskins pushed the margin to nine at 66-57 with 2:37 remaining. The Dragons rallied within 70-68 with 25 seconds left, but the Falcons held on when Gaskins knocked down 2 of 3 free throw attempts and Henderson swished 2 of 2 from the free throw line. Gaskins made 10 of 11 free throw attempts for the game.
Hakeem Anthony led three double-figure scorers with 19 points for the Dragons. Adrian Saunders added 16 points and Devon McKoy scored 10 points.
The Falcons will host William Peace University on Monday, December 15, in a historical contest between two Raleigh schools minutes apart from each other. This is believed to be the first meeting between the men's basketball teams. The non-conference game will be played at Emery Gymnasium at 7 p.m.
