Falcons Host Virginia-Lynchburg In Men's Basketball Saturday (Dec. 6)

RALEIGH, N.C. – After a successful trip to Florida last week, Saint Augustine's University returns to Emery Gymnasium for a non-conference men's basketball contest against Virginia University of Lynchburg on Saturday, December 6, 2014. Tip-off is 4 p.m.

Ticket prices are $11 for general admission and $5.50 for visiting college students with ID, faculty and staff, senior citizens, military personnel and children ages 6-12. Admission is free for Saint Augustine's University students and children ages 5-under with one paying adult.

The Falcons more than held their own against two unbeaten teams in the Florida Tech Thanksgiving Tournament in Melbourne, Fla., last week. They tripped Clayton State University 73-68 on the first day and scared host Florida Tech late before losing 77-66 to take home the runner-up trophy.

The tournament was a confidence-booster for the Falcons, who started to show progress last week in a 110-59 win over College of Faith, their first victory of the season. The Falcons (2-4 overall) hope their momentum carries over into Saturday's game against Virginia-Lynchburg.

Guard Raheem Jolliffe (Sr./Fayetteville, NC) and forward Quincy January (Fr./Atlanta, GA) are off to fast starts for the Falcons. Jolliffe is tied for the CIAA scoring lead with a 19.7 average. January is second in the CIAA in field-goal percentage (70.5) and offensive rebounds per game (4.33). Both players were named to the Florida Tech All-Tournament Team.

January, a high-leaping forward, is also making an impact nationally. He ranks 10th in offensive rebounds per game and 11th in field goal percentage in Division II. He was named CIAA Rookie of the Week after averaging 18 points on 75 percent shooting and 8.3 rebounds in his last three games. January, who averages 11.7 points and seven rebounds, is already creating a buzz with his highlight-reel dunks.

The Falcons are also receiving contributions from forward Damarian Henderson (Fr./Goldsboro, NC), guard Anthony Gaskins (So./Greenville, NC), guard Keith Crawford (Jr./Richmond, VA), guard Nick Tennell (Jr./Port St. Lucie, FL), forward Darian Allen (Fr./Durham, NC) and forward Julius Murphy (Fr./Goldsboro, NC).  Henderson averages 8.8 points and Gaskins averages 8.0 points, nearly four assists and 1.5 steals. Crawford averages 6.5 points and Tennell was selected CIAA Newcomer of the Week this week.

Virginia-Lynchburg (1-7 overall) lost 111-55 to Division I Elon University on Tuesday, December 2. Hakeem Anthony scored a game-high 21 points for Virginia-Lynchburg.
