Box Score RALEIGH, N.C. – Guard Xavier Saddler-Mee (Jr./Raleigh, NC) scored a game-high 18 points in his season debut to lead Saint Augustine's University to an 83-59 men's basketball victory over Virginia University of Lynchburg at Emery Gymnasium on Saturday, December 6, 2014.
The Falcons improved to 3-4 overall with the win. They have won three of their last four games. Virginia-Lynchburg fell to 1-9 overall.
Saddler-Mee, coming off an injury, looked in mid-season form. He was 5 of 6 from the floor and 8 of 10 from the free throw line for the Falcons, who shot 50 percent for the game. Guard Raheem Jolliffe (Sr./Fayetteville, NC), who entered the contest as the CIAA scoring leader, added 15 points. Forwards Quincy January (Fr./Atlanta, GA) and Damarian Henderson (Fr./Goldsboro, NC) each chipped in 10 points for the Falcons. January, the CIAA Rookie of the Week, added six rebounds.
Guard Anthony Gaskins (So./Greenville, NC) added nine points and five rebounds, and forward Julius Murphy (Fr./Goldsboro, NC) had eight points and seven rebounds. Guard John Koger (Sr./Greensboro, NC) snatched seven rebounds to tie Murphy for team-high honors, and guard Keith Crawford (Jr./Richmond, VA) had six rebounds.
Leading 41-31 at halftime, the Falcons shot 55 percent in the second half to take complete control. Saddler-Mee scored 11 second-half points on 3 of 3 shooting, including seven consecutive points during a two-minute stretch which pushed the margin to double digits for good. His offensive spurt keyed a 30-15 run in the final 13:36 which put the game away for the Falcons.
"The guys played hard for the most part," Falcons' Head Coach MarQus Johnson said. "We have to do a better job of executing on offense and defense. Our main thing is staying focused the whole 40 minutes. Once we buckle down, we can play our style of basketball. We will get better."
Led by Saddler-Mee, the Falcons outscored the Dragons 39-10 in bench points. Henderson also came off the bench for the Falcons.
Jaquan Sterling sparked the Dragons with 14 points. Jeremy Farmer added 13 points for the Dragons, who shot 34 percent from the floor.
Henderson and Saddler-Mee both scored seven points in the first half for the Falcons, who led between eight and 13 points in the final six minutes of the half. Sterling scored nine first-half points for the Dragons.
The Falcons will see the Dragons again next Saturday (December 13), this time in Lynchburg, Va. Game time is 4 p.m.
