Amere May (South Haven, MI) scored 26 of his 35 points in the second half to lead a furious Saint Augustine's University rally from a 22-point deficit, but the comeback fell short in a 92-87 CIAA men's basketball loss to Fayetteville State University at Emery Gymnasium on Saturday, February 1, 2014.
May scored 30 or more points for the third time this season. He entered the contest ranked second in the CIAA in scoring at 19.2 points a contest. May connected on 7-of-11 three-pointers.
"Amere is who he is," St. Aug Head Coach Tony Sheals said about his sharpshooting guard. "Late in the game, there is no other guy you want taking the shot but Amere."
Senior guard-forward
Joel Kindred (Raleigh, NC) added 18 points and senior center Jon Crawley (Richmond, VA) added 11 points. Junior forward
Tashaun Stockdale (Poplar, SC) had 10 points and six rebounds off the bench for the Falcons (1-3 Southern Division, 4-5 CIAA, 11-8 overall), who shot 49 percent from the floor.
The Broncos (3-1 Southern Division, 7-3 CIAA, 14-6 overall) led 81-59 with 11:31 left in the contest. The score was 82-62 with 7:07 remaining but May sparked a 23-3 St. Aug run to get the Falcons within two points. He scored 18 points during the spurt including 13 straight points capped by a three-point play to cut the Broncos' lead to 84-82 with 2:40 left in the game. May was 5-of-6 from the floor including 3-of-3 behind the three-point line in addition to 5-of-5 at the free throw line during the run.
The Broncos reeled off four straight points for an 88-82 lead, but May buried another three-pointer to chop the deficit to 88-85 with 42 seconds left. Tyrell Tate went 4-of-4 from the free throw line to seal the win for the Broncos, who led 92-85 with nine seconds remaining. Stockdale scored on a dunk for the final margin.
Coach Sheals said his team didn't quit after falling behind by double figures.
"As I always say, I'm proud of my guys," Sheals said. "I'm not going to trade them for anybody else because they give me their heart and soul. They continued to battle no matter the score."
Tate scored 18 points to lead six Broncos in double figures. Torian Showers and Marquette Hill each added 15 points while Joshua Dawson, Anthony Shelton, and Devin Thompson each scored 10 points for the Broncos, who shot 55 percent.
Both teams were deadly behind the three-point arc. The Falcons were 9-of-16 and the Broncos were 9-of-18.
The Falcons jumped out to a 4-0 lead early, but the Broncos went ahead by double digits before the midway point of the first half. The score was 58-41 in the Broncos' favor at halftime.
Kindred had 14 points on 6-for-10 shooting and May scored nine points for the Falcons, who shot 49 percent in the first half. Hill scored 13 points for the Broncos, who canned 65 percent of their shots in the opening stanza. Both teams combined to shoot 11 threes in the first half.
The Falcons visit Livingstone College in Salisbury, N.C., on Monday, February 3, 2014 at 7:30 p.m. The contest was originally scheduled on January 29 but was moved to Monday because of a winter storm.
