Falcons' Rally Falls Short Against Winston-Salem State

Box Score RALEIGH, N.C. – Senior center Jonathan Crawley (Richmond, VA) had 14 points, 11 rebounds and two blocks as Saint Augustine's University rallied late but fell short in a 62-59 CIAA men's basketball loss to Winston-Salem State University at Emery Gymnasium on Saturday, February 8, 2014.

Senior guard Amere May (South Haven, MI) added 12 points and four assists while junior forward Tashaun Stockdale (Poplar, SC) finished with 11 points, six rebounds and two blocks for the Falcons, who nearly came back from a 13-point second-half deficit.
The Rams led 48-35 with 12:29 left in the game. Their lead was 57-47 with 5:53 left when the Falcons made their move. May scored five points during an 11-3 surge which put the Falcons within 60-58 with a little under a minute remaining.

Down two points, the Falcons had a chance to tie with five seconds left but made one of two free throws. The Rams finished the scoring with two free throws with three seconds remaining.

The Falcons outshot the Rams 40 percent to 37 percent overall. The Rams won at the free throw line, making 19-of-25 free throws compared to 9-of-21 for the Falcons.

The trio of junior guard-forward Tayron Gibson (Alexandria, VA), senior guard-forward Joel Kindred (Raleigh, NC) and freshman forward Tavarez Hall (Beech Island, SC) each scored six points. Gibson added six steals for the Falcons (1-5 Southern Division, 4-8 CIAA, 11-11 overall).

Marquez Jones scored 14 points and WyKevin Bazemore added 13 points for the Rams (4-2 Southern Division, 8-4 CIAA, 13-9 overall). Preston Ross added nine points and 10 rebounds.

Crawley had nine points and seven rebounds in the first half for the Falcons, who fell behind 37-28 at halftime despite outshooting the Rams 44 percent to 36 percent. Jones of the Rams had 12 points at halftime.
