Falcons, Lady Falcons Visit Winston-Salem State In Basketball Doubleheader Saturday (Jan. 17)

Saint Augustine's University begins the divisional portion of its men's and women's basketball schedule on Saturday, January 17, 2015, against Winston-Salem State University at the Gaines Center in Winston-Salem, N.C. Tip-off is 2 p.m. for the women's contest and 4 p.m. for the men's game.

 

This is the first Southern Division game for all four teams. The divisional games will determine the seeding in the CIAA Tournament, which will be held February 23-28, 2015, in Charlotte, N.C. They will also decide the Northern and Southern Division champions.

 

The Lady Falcons are 2-3 in the CIAA and 8-6 overall, and the Lady Rams are 2-3 in the CIAA and 6-9 overall. The Falcons are 1-4 in the CIAA and 7-8 overall, and the Rams are 2-3 in the CIAA and 9-5 overall.

 

The Lady Falcons are coming off a 95-82 home loss to Virginia Union University while the Lady Rams beat Elizabeth City State University 70-47 at home on Monday, January 12. The Lady Falcons are the third-highest scoring team in the CIAA (74.9 points per game), and the Lady Rams rank third in the conference in points allowed (60.9 ppg).

 

Guard Regime McCombs (Jr./Greenville, SC) of the Lady Falcons leads four double-figure scorers in points per game (13.5). Guard Porscha Walton (Jr./Chesterfield, VA) averages 12.7 points and guard Jeanne-Marie Wilson (Jr./Temple Hills, MD) averages 12 points. Forward Terri Jacobs (Jr./McDonough, GA) averages 10.9 points and 8.9 rebounds for the Lady Falcons.

 

Forward Dionna Scott paces the Lady Rams with a 13.6 scoring average. Guards Kesheria Mcneil  and Taylar Wells average 12.4 points and 11 points, respectively.

 

The Falcons captured their first CIAA men's victory of the season in a 72-66 home win over Virginia Union while the Rams took a 93-85 victory over Elizabeth City State on Monday. Rebounding could be the key to the outcome in Saturday's contest. The Falcons are third in the CIAA in offensive rebounds per game (14.7) while the Rams are 10th in the league in defensive rebounds (23.0).

 

Guard Raheem Jolliffe (Sr./Fayetteville, NC) of the Falcons is one of the CIAA's top scorers. His 16.8 scoring average ranks third in the CIAA. Guard Anthony Gaskins (So./Greenville, NC) has been playing extremely well of late. He averages 12.8 points, 5.3 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 1.2 steals.

 

Marquez Jones paces a balanced scoring attack for the Rams. He leads five double-figure scorers with a 13.8 average. WyKevin Bazemore averages 11.3 points and a league-high 10.9 rebounds.
