Box Score WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Guard Raheem Jolliffe (Sr./Fayetteville, NC) continued his stellar scoring this season on Saturday, January 17, 2015.
The senior guard poured in 20 points for the Falcons in an 82-67 CIAA men's basketball loss to Winston-Salem State University at the Gaines Center. Half of his points came from the charity stripe where he connected on 10 of 10 free throw attempts.
Jolliffe is the Falcons' most consistent scoring threat this season. He ranks third in the CIAA in points per game (17.1) with a season-high of 30 points against Clayton State University on November 28, 2014. He has scored double figures in 13 of 14 games he's played this season.
Forward Quincy January (Fr./Atlanta, GA) gave Jolliffe some help against the Rams. He contributed 14 points on 7 of 7 shooting from the floor including three rim-rattling dunks for the Falcons. It should be no surprise that January shot so well. He is third in the CIAA in field-goal percentage (67.3).
Unfortunately for the Falcons, the scoring output of Jolliffe and January were not enough. The Rams placed five scorers in double figures including 17 points from Donta Harper. The Rams shot 52 percent for the contest with most of their baskets coming from the perimeter. The Rams made 9 of 22 three-point attempts compared to 3 of 15 three-point attempts for the Falcons (0-1 Southern Division, 1-5 CIAA, 7-9 overall).
The Falcons were respectable from the floor as they hit 45 percent of their shots including 54 percent in the second half when they scored the same amount of points (41) as the Rams. The first half was their undoing, however, as they shot 37 percent to fall behind 41-26 at halftime. The Rams shot 52 percent in the first half.
The Rams led by as many as 22 points in the second half. The Falcons did manage to cut the deficit to 13 points but the Rams (1-0 Southern Division, 3-3 CIAA, 10-5 overall) pushed the margin to 20 points in the game's latter stages.
Guard Anthony Gaskins (So./Greenville, NC) added seven points, six rebounds and five steals for the Falcons. Forward Darian Allen (Fr./Durham, NC) scored seven points.
The Falcons did not quit despite falling behind early. Led by eight rebounds from January, the Falcons outrebounded the Rams 35-29 which led to 20 second-chance points. Rebounding and the scoring of Jolliffe and January were the bright spots for the Falcons.
The Falcons will look to regroup against Johnson C. Smith University at the Harvey D. Heartley Sr. Court at Emery Gymnasium on Wednesday, January 21. Tip-off is 7:30 p.m.
