RALEIGH, N.C. - Saint Augustine's University will host Johnson C. Smith University in a men's and women's basketball doubleheader on the Harvey D. Heartley, Sr. Court at Emery Gymnasium on Wednesday, January 21, 2015. The women's contest begins at 5:30 p.m. followed by the men's contest at 7:30 p.m.
Ticket prices are $13 for general admission, and $8.50 for visiting college students with ID, faculty and staff, military personnel with ID and children ages 6 to 12. Admission is free for Saint Augustine's University students with ID and children ages 5 and under with one playing adult.
Both the Lady Falcons and the Lady Golden Bulls opened Southern Divisional play with victories on Saturday, January 17. The Lady Falcons (3-3 CIAA, 9-6 overall) defeated Winston-Salem State University 62-59, and the Lady Golden Bulls (5-1 CIAA, 15-2 overall) edged Fayetteville State University 59-57.
The Lady Falcons are one of the CIAA's highest-scoring teams. They rank third in the conference in points per game (74.0). The Lady Golden Bulls are limiting opponents to 61.5 points per contest.
The Lady Falcons are led by the fearless foursome of guards Regime McCombs (Jr./Greenville, SC), Porscha Walton (Jr./Chesterfield, VA), Jeanne-Marie Wilson (Jr./Temple Hills, MD) and forward Terri Jacobs. Both McCombs and Walton average 13.1 points and Wilson averages 11.7 points. Jacobs averages 11.2 points and 9.0 rebounds while Walton averages 2.4 assists and 2.1 steals. McCombs makes nearly 40 percent of her three-point attempts while Jacobs ranks 17th nationally in Division II in offensive rebounds per game (4.0).
Guard Anika Jones paces the Lady Golden Bulls in scoring. She averages 11.6 points and forward Lakendra Wilkerson averages 10.5 points on 56 percent shooting and 8.8 rebounds. Guard Asha Jordan averages 8.5 points, 2.6 assists and 1.9 steals.
The Falcons and Golden Bulls are both coming off losses in their first divisional games. The Falcons (1-5 CIAA, 7-9 overall) lost to Winston-Salem State 82-67 and the Golden Bulls (3-4 CIAA, 9-9 overall) were defeated by Fayetteville State 83-77 on Saturday.
The Falcons enter Wednesday's contest as the CIAA's second-best offensive rebounding team (14.8), thanks to Quincy January (Fr./Atlanta, GA). The first-year forward ranks 14th nationally in Division II in offensive rebounds per game (3.63). The Golden Bulls rank fifth in the conference in defensive rebounds per game (26.2). They also lead the league in field goal percentage (48.8) and assists per game (18.5).
January was named CIAA Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week for the third time on Tuesday, January 20. He teams up with Falcons' guards Raheem Jolliffe (Sr./Fayetteville, NC) and Anthony Gaskins (So./Greenville, NC) to form a formidable nucleus. Jolliffe ranks third in the CIAA with a 17.1 scoring average and Gaskins averages 12.4 points, 5.3 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 1.4 steals. January averages 10.1 points and 6.1 rebounds. He ranks second in the conference in field goal percentage (67.3).
Forward/center Emilio Parks is one of three double-figure scorers for the Golden Bulls. He leads the team with a 13.5 average while forward Stedmon Lemon and guard Diondre Pratt average 13.0 and 11.6 points, respectively. Parks averages 5.1 rebounds and guard Robert Davis III averages 5.1 assists and 1.1 steals.
