RALEIGH, N.C. – Two big games are scheduled for Wednesday, January 28, 2015, when Saint Augustine's University takes on Livingstone College in a men's and women's basketball doubleheader on the Harvey D. Heartley, Sr. Court at Emery Gymnasium. Action starts with the women's game at 5:30 p.m. followed by the men's contest at 7:30 p.m.
Ticket prices are $13 for general admission, and $8.50 for visiting college students with ID, faculty and staff, military personnel with ID and children ages 6 to 12. Admission is free for Saint Augustine's University students with ID and children ages 5 and under with one playing adult.
If you can't attend the doubleheader, WAUG will televise both games on Time Warner Cable 1231 and digital television channel 8. WAUG will also live stream both contests on its website www.waug-network.com. WAUG is a campus commercial radio and television station owned and operated by Saint Augustine's University.
The first contest pits the Lady Falcons of Saint Augustine's University against unbeaten Livingstone, which was ranked 18th nationally in the USA Today Coaches Poll as of Tuesday. The Lady Blue Bears (9-0 CIAA, 18-0 overall) sit atop the Southern Division standings at 3-0 while the Lady Falcons (4-4 CIAA, 10-7 overall) are one-half game back at 2-1.
The Lady Falcons are coming off a tough 87-83 loss to crosstown rival Shaw University on Saturday, January 24, which snapped a two-game winning streak. Guard Regime McCombs (Jr./Greenville, SC) leads the Falcons with a 13.8 scoring average and guard Porscha Walton (Jr./Chesterfield, VA) averages 13.4 points, 4.5 rebounds, three assists and 2.1 steals. Forward Terri Jacobs (Jr./McDonough, GA) averages 11.7 points and 9.7 rebounds while guard Jeanne-Marie Wilson (Redshirt Jr./Temple Hills, MD) averages 11.3 points.
McCombs is third in the CIAA in three-point shooting percentage (37.2) and Jacobs ranks fourth in the conference in rebounding and fifth in field-goal percentage (55.1). The Lady Falcons rank second in the CIAA in points per game (75.1).
The Lady Blue Bears are the surprise of the CIAA. Their 78-74 victory over Johnson C. Smith on Saturday was only their seventh win under double digits this season. Forward Kyra Crosby leads the Lady Blue Bears with a 13.6 scoring average followed by forward Precious Roberts with a 13.0 scoring average and 2.6 steals average. Guard Cierra York averages 12.3 points and guard Amber Curtis averages 12.0 points. Center Wende Foster averages close to two blocks per game.
Crosby ranks third in the CIAA in field-goal percentage (59.4). York and Curtis are fourth (35.8) and fifth (35.3), respectively, in three-point field goal percentage while Roberts is fourth in steals. The Lady Blue Bears lead the CIAA in points per game (78.3) and points allowed per game (59.9). Head Coach Anita Howard was a former Lady Falcons' assistant under current SAU Head Coach Rachel Bullard.
The Falcons (3-5 CIAA, 9-9 overall) are surging after defeating crosstown rival Shaw 66-62 on Saturday. The win was the second in the row for the Falcons, who are third in the Southern Division at 2-1 overall. The nucleus of guards Raheem Jolliffe (Sr./Fayetteville, NC) and Anthony Gaskins (So./Greenville, NC) and forward Quincy January (Fr./Atlanta, GA) has sparked the Falcons, who have held opponents to 63.6 points in their last three wins.
Jolliffe, the CIAA scoring leader, averages 17.5 points and Gaskins averages 12.9 points, 4.9 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 1.6 steals. Gaskins ranks fifth in the CIAA in assists and steals. January averages 10.6 points and 6.7 rebounds in addition to leading the CIAA in field-goal percentage (67.5). The Falcons are second in the CIAA in offensive rebounds per game (14.7).
The Blue Bears (6-3 CIAA, 12-6 overall) are riding a four-game winning streak after beating Johnson C. Smith 93-81 on Saturday. The defending CIAA champions are tied for first in the Southern Division at 3-0. Guard Eric Dubose paces the Blue Bears with a 16.2 scoring average, and forward Hakeem Jackson averages 14.6 points.
Forward Eric Mayo averages 14.3 points and 8.4 rebounds while guard Ty Newman averages 12.8 points for the Blue Bears. Dubose ranks third in the league in scoring and fourth in steals while Mayo ranks third in rebounding and fourth in field-goal percentage (58.9). The Blue Bears are first in the CIAA in field-goal percentage (48.5).
