Falcons Fall To ECSU In CIAA Basketball Opener

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. – Guard Raheem Jolliffe (Sr./Fayetteville, NC) scored 18 points and Anthony Gaskins (Soph./Greenville, NC) added 14 points for Saint Augustine's University, but the Falcons couldn't overcome hot three-point shooting by Elizabeth City State University in a 79-70 men's basketball loss at the R.L. Vaughn Center on Saturday, January 3, 2015.

The loss snapped a four-game winning streak by the Falcons, who dropped to 0-1 in the CIAA and 6-5 overall in their conference opener. The Vikings upped their record to 2-0 in the CIAA and 9-6 overall.

Guard Xavier Saddler-Mee (Jr./Raleigh, NC) added nine points while forward Julius Murphy (Fr./Goldsboro, NC) and forward Marquis Hines (Jr./Fayetteville, NC) both chipped in eight points for the Falcons, who shot 50 percent from the floor and made 11 of 13 free throw attempts for 85 percent. The Vikings countered with 56 percent shooting from the floor including 12 of 22 three-point attempts for 55 percent.

Glenn Patterson sparked the Vikings with 21 points. Darrell Ward and Miykael Faulcon both contributed 13 points.

The Falcons fell behind 52-42 early in the second half, but whittled the margin to one point twice, the second time at 61-60 on Jolliffe's three-pointer with 7:20 left. The Vikings then went on an 18-6 spurt to for a 79-66 lead with 1:51 remaining.

The Falcons shot 54 percent in the second half, but the Vikings canned 60 percent of their shots including 7 of 11 three-point attempts for 64 percent. Overall, the Vikings won the rebounding battle 34-18, but the Falcons outscored the Vikings 24-14 in the paint and scored 17 points off 16 ECSU turnovers.

Gaskins scored nine points and Jolliffe added eight points in the first half for the Falcons, who fell behind 37-33 at halftime. The Falcons led 17-9 early on two free throws by Saddler-Mee, but the Vikings took a 26-23 lead on a three-pointer and didn't relinquish it the rest of the contest.

The Falcons are back in action Monday, January 5, 2015, when they visit Chowan University in Murfreesboro, N.C. The CIAA contest begins at 7:30 p.m.
