The Falcons (0-1 CIAA, 6-5 overall) are looking to bounce back from a 79-70 road loss to Elizabeth City State University in their CIAA opener on Saturday, January 3. The defeat snapped a four-game winning streak.
The backcourt play of Raheem Jolliffe (Sr./Fayetteville, NC) and Anthony Gaskins (So./Greenville, NC) stood out for the Falcons on Saturday. Jolliffe, ranked second in the CIAA in scoring, pumped in 18 points and handed out four assists. Gaskins totaled 14 points, 5 assists and 2 steals.
The contest features two of the top three-point shooting teams in the CIAA. The Hawks (1-1 CIAA, 7-4 overall) rank second in three-point field goal percentage (41.0) and the Falcons are third (36.9).The Hawks also lead the CIAA in points allowed (62.3 ppg) and field goal percentage defense (38.3). The Falcons average 75 points and shoot 45 percent from the floor.
Jolliffe averages 18.3 points to lead four double-digit scorers for the Falcons. Guard Xavier Saddler-Mee (Jr./Raleigh, NC) averages 13.5 points, Gaskins averages 11.3 points and forward Quincy January (Fr./Atlanta, GA) averages 10.3 points in addition to 6.3 rebounds. January is one of the top Division II offensive rebounders in the nation. Gaskins averages 4 assists.
The Falcons face a Chowan squad which lost to Shaw University 69-62 at home on Saturday. Kortez Smith came off the bench to score 17 points and Kyree Bethel added 14 points for the Hawks.Tiron Brown chipped in 12 points.
Smith is the Hawks' top scorer at 11.9 points a game, and Bethel averages 11.6 points. Josh Mellette averages 7 rebounds and Brown averages 3.5 assists.
