RALEIGH, N.C. – Saint Augustine's University will host Bowie State University in a CIAA men's and women's basketball doubleheader at Emery Gymnasium on Thursday, January 8, 2015. Admission is free for both games, which will start at 5:30 p.m. (women) and 7:30 p.m. (men).
This will be the CIAA home opener for the Falcons and Lady Falcons. An unveiling ceremony to name the basketball and volleyball court after former Falcons' Athletic Director and legendary Men's Head Basketball Coach Harvey Heartley, Sr. will be held before the doubleheader inside Emery Gymnasium at 4 p.m.
The Lady Falcons (1-1 CIAA, 7-4 Overall) will try to start another winning streak on Thursday after losing 82-66 to Chowan University on Monday, January 5. They entered the Chowan contest on a five-game winning streak.
Both the Lady Falcons and Lady Bulldogs (1-2 CIAA, 6-6 Overall) are among the top five CIAA teams in three-point shooting percentage and rebounding. The Lady Falcons shoot 31 percent behind the arc and average 45 rebounds. The Lady Bulldogs make 28 percent of their three-pointers and average 46 rebounds.
Guard Regime McCombs (Jr./Greenville, SC) paces the Lady Falcons in points per game (13.7) and ranks third in the conference in three-point shooting percentage (41.9). Guards Jeanne-Marie Wilson (Jr./Temple Hills, MD) and Porscha Walton (Jr./Chesterfield, VA) average 12.5 and 12.4 points, respectively. Forward Terri Jacobs (Jr./McDonough, GA) averages 10.6 points and 8.9 rebounds. She had 20 points and 14 rebounds against Chowan on Monday. Walton leads the Lady Falcons in assists (2.5) and steals (2.2) per game.
Guard Ty-Nita Baker of the Lady Bulldogs ranks fourth in the CIAA in scoring. She averages 16.4 points followed by guard Kyah Proctor, who had 14 points and six assists in a 77-72 overtime victory over Winston-Salem State University on Monday to snap a three-game losing streak. Forward Donia Naylor averages 13.4 points and 10.9 rebounds, which is second-best in the CIAA.
The men's contest features two of the top three scorers in the CIAA. Guard Cameron Knox of the Bulldogs ranks second in points per game (17.9) and guard Raheem Jolliffe of the Falcons ranks third (17.6).
Both teams have a solid supporting cast. Guard Xavier Saddler-Mee (Jr./Raleigh, NC) averages 13.5 points and guard Anthony Gaskins (So./Greenville, NC) averages 10.9 points, four assists and 1.2 steals. Forward Quincy January (Fr./Atlanta, GA) averages 9.8 points and 6.1 rebounds for the Falcons (0-2 CIAA, 6-6 overall). January also ranks third in the CIAA in field-goal percentage (65.0).
Forward Andre Jackson averages 11 points and 6.4 rebounds for the Bulldogs (3-0 CIAA, 11-4 Overall). Guard Ahmaad Wilson averages 10.5 points and guard Zafir Williams averages 3.4 assists. Knox averages 1.5 steals per game.
The Falcons are looking to stop a two-game losing streak after previously winning four in a row. They lost to Chowan University 76-47 on Monday. The Bulldogs have won five straight contests including a 77-71 victory over Winston-Salem State on Monday.
