Falcons Fall To Bowie State University In Men's Basketball

RALEIGH, N.C. – Guard Anthony Gaskins (So./Greenville, NC) scored 20 points for Saint Augustine's University in an 86-66 CIAA men's basketball loss to Bowie State University in the newly named Harvey D. Heartley Sr. Court at Emery Gymnasium on Thursday, January 8, 2015.

The Falcons fell to 0-3 in the CIAA and 6-7 overall. The Bulldogs remained unbeaten in the CIAA at 4-0 and improved to 12-4 overall.

Guard Raheem Jolliffe (Sr./Fayetteville, NC) and forward Quincy January (Fr./Atlanta, GA) both chipped in 10 points for the Falcons. Cameron Knox scored 19 points and Andre Jackson added 11 points for the Bulldogs. Julian Livingston came off the bench to score 10 points.

The Falcons never led, but they stayed within single points until late in the first half. Leading 33-27 with 3:10 remaining, the Bulldogs gained breathing room with a 10-2 run for a 43-29 halftime lead. The Falcons began the second half on a 10-6 run to get within 49-39, but they would get no closer. The Bulldogs gradually pulled away for the win.

Despite the loss, there were several highlights for the Falcons. They outrebounded the taller Bulldogs 35-32 including 17-12 on the offensive end which led to a 22-20 edge in second-chance points. The Falcons also outscored the Bulldogs 34-22 in the paint.

The Falcons shot a respectable 45 percent including 44 percent behind the three-point arc on 8 of 18 shooting. They were only outscored 43-37 in the second half.

But the Falcons could not overcome 52 percent shooting by the Bulldogs, who knocked down 12 of 28 three point attempts for 43 percent. The Bulldogs also outshot the Falcons from the free throw line, making 20 of 28 free throw attempts to 6 of 16 free throw attempts for the Falcons.

Forward Marquis Hines (Jr./Fayetteville, NC) added six points while guard John Koger (Sr./Greensboro, NC) and forward Julius Murphy (Fr./Goldsboro, NC) each added five points and five rebounds for the Falcons. Jolliffe collected seven rebounds. For the Bulldogs, Zafir Williams and Enuoma Ebinum each scored eight points.

The Falcons will play their second home game in three days on Saturday, January 10. They will host The Lincoln (Pa.) University on the Heartley Court inside Emery Gymnasium at 4 p.m.
