Saint Augustine's University will begin the 2015-16 men's basketball season at the Trojan Tip-Off Classic, which will be held Friday, Nov. 13, and Saturday, Nov. 14, in Ettrick, Va.
The Falcons, led by second-year Head Coach MarQus Johnson, will take on Glenville State College on Friday and Slippery Rock University on Saturday in the Classic, hosted by Virginia State University at Daniel Gymnasium. Both contests will start at 6 p.m.
Seven lettermen return for the Falcons including preseason All-CIAA selections Quincy January (So./Atlanta, GA) and Anthony Gaskins (Jr./Greenville, NC). January, a forward, was named CIAA Rookie of the Year a season ago after averaging 10.9 points and 7.4 rebounds per game. Known for his rim-rattling dunks, January led the CIAA in field goal percentage (63.6) as a freshman. He also ranked 11th in Division II in offensive rebounds per game (3.64).
Gaskins, who averaged 14.4 points per game last season at the guard position, is the team's top returning scorer. He ranked among the CIAA's top 10 players in assists (3.1) and steals (1.5) as a sophomore. He also averaged 4.6 rebounds per game and led the Falcons with 73 three-point field goals.
The Falcons are also bolstered by seniors Keith Crawford (Guard/Richmond, VA), Marquis Hines (Forward/Fayetteville, NC), Nick Moyer (Forward/Martinsville, VA) and Nick Tennell (Guard/Port St. Lucie, FL), and sophomore Julius Murphy (Guard/Goldsboro, NC). They are expected to provide veteran leadership to a squad which includes newcomers Jeremy Saunders (Jr./Guard/Hampton, VA), Andre Stanley (Jr./Forward/Virginia Beach, VA), D.J. Chamblee (Fr./Guard/Kernersville, NC), Devin Derry (Fr./Guard/Acworth, GA), Tyler Packer (Fr./Guard/Pinehurst, NC) and Antonio Watson (Fr./Guard/Raleigh, NC).
The first home game for the Falcons is Friday, Nov. 20, against Belmont Abbey College at Emery Gymnasium. Game time is 7 p.m.
