Falcons Down Slippery Rock 60-50, Improves To 2-0 In Men's Basketball

ETTRICK, Va. – Forward Quincy January (So./Atlanta, GA) scored 16 points and corralled 10 rebounds as Saint Augustine's University capped a successful weekend with a 60-50 men's basketball victory over Slippery Rock University in the Trojan Tip-Off Classic at Daniel Gymnasium on Saturday, Nov. 14, 2015.

The Falcons held Slippery Rock to 30 percent shooting to improve to 2-0 overall. They were the only squad in the four-team event to win both games. On Friday, the Falcons topped Glenville State College 77-71.

January is known for his highlight-reel dunks, but he scored most of his points at the charity stripe against Slippery Rock. He knocked down 10 of 14 free-throw attempts.

Guard Keith Crawford (Sr./Richmond, VA) added 13 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals for the Falcons. Guard Jeremy Saunders (Jr./Hampton, VA) contributed 10 points including 2-for-4 three-point shooting, and forward Andre Stanley (Jr./Virginia Beach, VA) finished with five points, five rebounds and two steals.

January scored 11 points and Saunders added 10 points in the second half when the Falcons held off a Slippery Rock rally with a run of their own. Ahead 28-19 early in the second half, the Falcons watched their lead dwindle as Slippery Rock (1-1 overall) scored nine consecutive points to tie the game at 28-28. The contest was tied again at 33-33 before the Falcons led for good.

January ended a 9-0 run with two free throws for a 42-33 Falcons' lead with 7:57 left in the game. The margin stayed between four and nine points until the one-minute mark when the lead reached double digits.

January helped the Falcons outrebound Slippery Rock 32-29 which led to a 10-7 edge in second chance points. The Falcons held a 12-6 advantage in turnover points and outscored Slippery Rock 21-4 in bench points.

Cornelius Brown scored 19 points and Malcolm Richardson added 15 points for Slippery Rock, which made only 7 of 24 shots for 29 percent in the second half. Slippery Rock only made 1 of 12 shots behind the three-point arc for the contest.

The Falcons will make their home debut against Belmont Abbey College at Emery Gymnasium on Friday, Nov. 20. Game time is 7 p.m.
