Last Meeting vs. Chowan
The Falcons mounted a furious rally down the stretch, but fell to Chowan 65-60 in the second round of the CIAA Basketball Tournament at Time Warner Cable Arena on Feb. 25, 2015. Down 55-46 with just under eight minutes remaining, the Falcons came back behind the scoring of Raheem Jolliffe. The All-CIAA guard scored the last six points during a 14-4 run, including a three-pointer which pulled the Falcons within 60-59 with 2:36 left. But the Falcons missed five three-point shots in the last 2:08 that would have either tied the score or gave them the lead. Their last miss occurred with 10 seconds remaining and the Hawks nursing a three-point lead. The Hawks iced the contest with two free throws with six seconds left. Guard Anthony Gaskins finished 17 points and five assists for the Falcons. Jolliffe added 15 points and Quincy January added 13 points and nine rebounds.
About the Falcons' Head Coach
MarQus Johnson is in his second season as the Falcons' head men's basketball coach. In his first season, Johnson coached guard Raheem Jolliffe to All-CIAA honors and forward Quincy January to CIAA Rookie of the Year honors. Johnson was elevated to head coach after two seasons as assistant men's basketball coach for the Falcons from 2012 to 2014. He was previously an assistant coach at Saint Augustine's University from 2008 to 2010. In the 2009-10 season, Johnson helped direct the Falcons to their second CIAA championship in school history. That squad advanced to the NCAA Division II Tournament and earned a national top 25 ranking.
Last Game
Anthony Gaskins (Jr./Greenville, NC) scored 18 points for the Falcons, but they could not overcome frigid shooting in a 61-53 men's basketball loss to Belmont Abbey College at Emery Gymnasium on Friday, Nov. 20, 2015. The loss was the first in three games for the Falcons, who were attempting to start 3-0 for the first time since the 2007-08 season. The Falcons were undone by 26 percent shooting from the floor and 48 percent shooting from the free-throw line. They shot 18 percent from the floor in the first half to fall behind 23-17 at halftime. Despite their shooting woes, the Falcons almost rallied to victory. A 16-point deficit dwindled to four during an 18-6 Falcons' run in a six-minute span. Gaskins drilled his second three-pointer of the second half to pull the Falcons within 52-48 with 2:34 left. Quincy January (So./Atlanta, GA) added nine points and D.J. Chamblee (Fr./Greensboro, NC) contributed six points and nine rebounds for the Falcons, who outrebounded the Crusaders 51-39 and forced 20 turnovers to climb back in the game. The Falcons outscored the Crusaders 23-12 in second-chance points.
Gaskins Leads Falcons In Scoring
Preseason All-CIAA pick Anthony Gaskins (Jr./Greenville, NC) is picking up where he left off last season. After missing the first two games due to injury, Gaskins poured in 18 points against Belmont Abbey in his season debut last Friday. He now leads the Falcons with 18 points and three steals per game.
Crawford Among CIAA Assist Leaders
Keith Crawford (Sr./Richmond, VA) is a veteran floor leader who is a big key to the Falcons' 2-1 start. He is tied for fourth in the CIAA with 4.3 assists per game. Crawford also averages nine points and three rebounds per contest.
Moyer Among CIAA Rebound Leaders
Nick Moyer (Sr./Martinsville, VA) is a big reason why the Falcons rank second in the CIAA in rebounding margin per game (9.0). He is tied for ninth in the CIAA with seven rebounds per game.
