Box Score MURFREESBORO, N.C. – Anthony Gaskins (Jr./Greenville, NC) scored a game-high 24 points for Saint Augustine's University in an 85-75 men's basketball non-conference loss to Chowan University at the Helms Center on Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2015. Both Saint Augustine's University and Chowan are CIAA members.
Gaskins was 9-for-13 from the floor including 5-for-7 from three-point range. He added four assists and two steals for the Falcons, who shot a season-best 46 percent from the floor. They were 9-for-19 behind the three-point arc for 47 percent.
The Falcons struggled from the free-throw line, however. They made only 12 of 29 from the charity stripe for 41 percent. Chowan was 24 of 35 from the free-throw line for 69 percent.
The contrast in free throw percentage helped Chowan maintain a double-digit lead most of the contest. The Hawks never trailed as they opened a 48-35 halftime lead. The margin stayed above 10 points until the game's final minute when a Gaskins' three-pointer and layup sliced the Falcons' deficit to 81-75 with 21 seconds left. The Hawks (4-1 overall) scored the final four points for the 10-point victory.
Gaskins was one of four double-figure scorers for the Falcons. Andre Stanley (Jr./Virginia Beach, VA) added 12 points, Jeremy Saunders (Jr./Hampton, VA) scored 11 points and Quincy January (So./Atlanta, GA) registered 10 points. Marquis Hines (Sr./Fayetteville, NC) nearly recorded a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds.
Marco Haskins scored 23 points, and Kortez Smith added 21 points, nine assists and three steals for the Hawks, who shot 46 percent. Josh Mellette tallied 12 points, seven assists, six rebounds and three steals, and Tim Hewett had 11 points.
The Falcons will compete in the Finis Horne Holiday Classic in Greenwood, S.C., during the Thanksgiving Holiday weekend. They will face Lander University on Friday, Nov. 27, at 7:30 p.m. and Lenoir-Rhyne University on Saturday, Nov. 28, at 1:30 p.m.
