In the first meeting on January 24 at Shaw's Spaulding Gymnasium, the Falcons defeated the Bears 66-62 in the men's game. In the women's contest, the Lady Bears were victorious over the Lady Falcons 87-83.
The Falcons (11-12 overall) enter the men's contest Saturday one game out of first place in the CIAA Southern Division. They are third at 4-3 behind co-leaders Livingstone College and Winston-Salem State University with both teams sporting 5-2 division marks.
The terrific backcourt tandem of guard
Raheem Jolliffe (Sr./Fayetteville, NC) and guard
Anthony Gaskins (So./Greenville, NC) has sparked the Falcons to a two-game winning streak. Gaskins is averaging 29.5 points this week including a career-high 35 points against Winston-Salem State on Monday. Jolliffe, the CIAA scoring leader, is averaging 17 points in two games this week.
Quincy January (Fr./Atlanta, GA), the CIAA field-goal percentage leader, is averaging 16 points and 10.5 rebounds on 75 percent shooting this week.
The trio was impressive in the Falcons' earlier victory over the Bears. Jolliffe and Gaskins combined on 11 of 21 three-pointers for the Falcons, who rallied from a seven-point halftime deficit. Jolliffe led the way with 22 points and Gaskins scored 15. January chipped in 13 points and 11 rebounds.
The Falcons had success slowing down Bears' leading scorer Larry Richardson the last time and hope to do the same Saturday. Richardson, who leads the Bears with a 14.8 scoring average, netted seven points in the first contest. Koron Reed led the Bears in scoring that day with 18 points and Jamar Cooper added 17.
The Bears (10-13 overall) enter Saturday's contest on a three-game losing streak. They are sixth in the Southern Division with a 1-6 mark.
The Lady Falcons (11-11 overall), who will wear pink uniforms in support of breast cancer awareness, will try to knock off the Lady Bears after barely losing the first game against their crosstown rival. Guard
Regime McCombs (Jr./Greenville, SC) is looking to duplicate her success against the Lady Bears on Saturday after scoring 18 points on them the first time. Forward
Terri Jacobs (Jr./McDonough, GA) is coming off a 16-point, 13-rebound night against Johnson C. Smith University on Wednesday, February 11, 2015.
The Lady Bears (15-10 overall) are led by 6-foot-4 center Verdine Warner, who ranks second in the CIAA in scoring (20) and first in rebounding (12.6). She finished with 24 points, 13 rebounds and five blocks against the Lady Falcons earlier in the season.
The Lady Falcons, in the midst of a two-game losing streak, are tied for fourth in the Southern Division at 2-5. The Lady Bears are second in the division at 5-2.
