Men's Basketball Team Visits Winston-Salem State In CIAA Southern Division Opener Saturday, Jan. 16

The Saint Augustine's University men's basketball team will visit Winston-Salem State University at the Gaines Center in Winston-Salem, N.C., on Saturday, Jan. 16, 2016, at 4 p.m.

The Falcons are 5-11 overall and 0-6 in the CIAA. The Rams are 6-10 overall and 0-5 in the CIAA.

This is the Southern Division opener for the Falcons and Rams, who are both looking for their first CIAA victory.

Anthony Gaskins pumped in a career-high 35 points to spark the Falcons to an 86-71 runaway victory over Winston-Salem State at Emery Gymnasium in Raleigh, N.C., on Feb. 9, 2015.

Raheem Jolliffe poured in 20 points for the Falcons in an 82-67 loss to Winston-Salem State on Jan. 17, 2015. Half of his points came from the charity stripe where he connected on 10 of 10 free throw attempts.

About the Falcons' Head Coach

MarQus Johnson is in his second season as the Falcons' head men's basketball coach. In his first season, Johnson coached guard Raheem Jolliffe to All-CIAA honors and forward Quincy January to CIAA Rookie of the Year honors. Johnson was elevated to head coach after two seasons as assistant men's basketball coach for the Falcons from 2012 to 2014. He was previously an assistant coach at Saint Augustine's University from 2008 to 2010. In the 2009-10 season, Johnson helped direct the Falcons to their second CIAA championship in school history. That squad advanced to the NCAA Division II Tournament and earned a national top 25 ranking.

The Falcons rank second in the CIAA in points allowed per game (70.6).

The Falcons are third in the CIAA in offensive rebounds per game (13.8) and fourth in rebound margin per game (1.8).

 

January Leads The CIAA In Rebounding

Sophomore forward Quincy January (Atlanta, GA) leads the CIAA in rebounds per game (8.9). He is fifth in the CIAA in blocks (16) and fifth in field goal percentage (58.3). January is the team's leading scorer with a 15.6 average. He is a Preseason All-CIAA pick who was the league's rookie of the year last season. The high-leaping forward has six double-doubles, which ranks 19th nationally in Division II.

Preseason All-CIAA pick Anthony Gaskins (Jr./Greenville, NC) is picking up where he left off last season. He is the team's second-leading scorer with a 12.8 average despite missing four games due to injury.

 

Crawford Steady In The Backcourt

Senior guard Keith Crawford (Richmond, VA) is third on the team in points per game (10.4) and leads the team in assists per game (3.1). He is fourth on the team in rebounds per game (3.6). Crawford was named CIAA Player of the Week this season.

Terrell Leach leads Winston-Salem State in points per game (15.6) and tied for the team lead in steals per game (1.4).
