Falcons Host Fayetteville State In Men's Basketball Saturday, Jan. 30, at 4 p.m.

The Saint Augustine's University men's basketball team will host Fayetteville State University on the Harvey D. Heartley, Sr. Court at Emery Gymnasium in Raleigh, N.C., on Saturday, Jan. 30, 2016, at 4 p.m.

 

Records

The Falcons are 6-13 overall, 1-8 in the CIAA and 1-2 in the Southern Division. The Broncos are 9-10 overall, 4-6 in the CIAA and 2-2 in the Southern Division.

Ticket Prices

Ticket prices are $13 for general admission and $8.50 for faculty, staff, military personal with identification (ID), visiting college students with ID and children ages 6 to 12. The doubleheader is free for Saint Augustine's University students with ID and children ages 5 and under.

 

Story Line

The Falcons will attempt to build momentum off their first CIAA victory of the season, which occurred Wednesday, Jan. 27. They return home to Emery Gymnasium after playing six of their last seven games, including the last three, on the road. The contest against Fayetteville State is the first of four straight home games.

 

Last Meeting

Raheem Jolliffe poured in 23 points, but the Falcons suffered a heartbreaking 78-75 loss to Fayetteville State in the regular-season finale on the Harvey D. Heartley, Sr. Court at Emery Gymnasium Feb. 21, 2015. The contest was held on Senior Day for the Falcons.

 

Last Game

Guard Anthony Gaskins (Jr./Greenville, NC) scored 19 points including 14 in the second half as the Falcons held off Livingstone College 66-64 in a CIAA contest at New Trent Gymnasium on Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2016. Forward Quincy January (So./Atlanta, GA) added 10 points and eight rebounds for the Falcons, who outscored the Blue Bears 9-6 after trailing 58-57 with 4:22 remaining. The Falcons made 3 of 4 free throws in the final 42 seconds including a free throw by Nick Tennell (Sr./Port St. Lucie, FL) with 15 seconds left for a 66-64 lead. The Falcons then forced the Blue Bears to take a tough, contested shot in the paint which failed to reach the rim. After January grabbed the rebound, Gaskins dribbled downcourt as time expired for the win.

 

About the Falcons' Head Coach

MarQus Johnson is in his second season as the Falcons' head men's basketball coach. In his first season, Johnson coached guard Raheem Jolliffe to All-CIAA honors and forward Quincy January to CIAA Rookie of the Year honors. Johnson was elevated to head coach after two seasons as assistant men's basketball coach for the Falcons from 2012 to 2014. He was previously an assistant coach at Saint Augustine's University from 2008 to 2010. In the 2009-10 season, Johnson helped direct the Falcons to their second CIAA championship in school history. That squad advanced to the NCAA Division II Tournament and earned a national top 25 ranking.

The Falcons rank second in the CIAA in points allowed per game (70.9).

 

January Leads CIAA In Rebounding

Sophomore forward Quincy January (Atlanta, GA) leads the CIAA in rebounds per game (9.1). His 3.32 offensive rebounds per game rank 23rd in Division II. He is sixth in the CIAA in blocks (19) and fifth in field goal percentage (58.2). January is the team's leading scorer with a 15.4 average. He is a Preseason All-CIAA pick who was the league's rookie of the year last season. The high-leaping forward has eight double-doubles, which ranks 26th nationally in Division II.

 

January Among Nation's Leaders In Free Throw Attempts

Quincy January ranks 10th nationally in Division II in free throw attempts (160).

 

Gaskins Scoring From The Perimeter

Preseason All-CIAA pick Anthony Gaskins (Jr./Greenville, NC) is picking up where he left off last season. He is the team's second-leading scorer with a 14.0 average despite missing four games due to injury. The Falcons' guard leads the team with 37 three-pointers made.

 

Crawford Steady In The Backcourt

Senior guard Keith Crawford (Richmond, VA) is third on the team in points per game (9.8) and leads the team in assists per game (3.3). He is tied for third on the team in rebounds per game (3.5). Crawford was named CIAA Player of the Week once this season.

 

About The Opponent

Forward Michael Tyson ranks third in the CIAA with a 17.8 scoring average and also averages 7.2 rebounds. Guard Joshua Dawson averages 15.7 points per game and 8.2 assists, which ranks second nationally in Division II. Dawson is the NCAA Division II national leader in total assists (147). Head Coach Alphonza Kee is in his seventh season with the Broncos, who rank 11th nationally in Division II in free throw attempts. The Broncos rank second in the CIAA in free throw attempts (28.5) and free throws made per game (19.2).
