Falcons Fall To Virginia Union In Men's Basketball

RALEIGH, N.C. – Quincy January (So./Atlanta, GA) of Saint Augustine's University scored 19 points, but the Falcons lost to Virginia Union University 85-53 in men's basketball at Emery Gymnasium on Monday, Jan. 4, 2016.

The contest was a non-conference affair between the two CIAA teams, who will meet again in a league tilt next Monday (Jan. 11) in Richmond, Va., at 7:30 p.m.

Keith Crawford (Sr./Richmond, VA) added 10 points for the Falcons (5-7 overall). Marquis Hines (Sr./Fayetteville, NC) chipped in eight points.

Coming off an 18-day holiday break, the Falcons were sluggish from the start. After falling behind early, they trailed 41-25 at halftime as the Panthers shot 62.5 percent in the first half. The Panthers (6-7 overall) were even hotter in the second half, shooting 75 percent as they outscored the Falcons 44-28. For the contest, the Panthers shot 68.8 percent and the Falcons shot 38.9 percent.

The Falcons, who shot 44.4 percent in the second half, made a brief run after falling behind by 23 points. Crawford nailed a three-pointer to cap an 11-2 run which chopped the deficit to 60-46 midway in the second half. But the Panthers, led by 22 points each from Ray Anderson and Kory Cooley, pushed the margin to 35 points with less than two minutes left.

The contest marked the end of the non-conference schedule for the Falcons. The CIAA season resumes on Thursday, Jan. 7, with a trip to Bowie, Md., to face Bowie State University at 7:30 p.m. This will be the first of a five-game road swing for the Falcons.
