Falcons Edge Mansfield Which Beat Division I Team Last Week

RALEIGH, NC (Nov 12) – On Friday, Nov. 11, Quincy January (Jr./Atlanta, GA) scored 19 points and Kenneth Collins (Jr./Clayton, NC) added 16 points on 4-for-8 three-point shooting as Saint Augustine's University opened the men's basketball season with an impressive 66-60 victory over Mansfield University in the Trojan Tip-Off Classic in Ettrick, Va.

Mansfield (0-1) was coming off a 79-74 exhibition win over Division I Duquesne last week, but the Falcons led all but one minute of the contest. Anthony Gaskins (Sr./Greenville, NC) added 11 points as the Falcons made 10 of 25 threes for 40 percent.

The Falcons relied on offense to seize momentum in the first half. After falling behind early, they never relinquished the lead after going ahead 13-10 on a trey by Chris Melton (So./Richmond, VA) in the first half.

The margin grew to 36-22 at halftime, and the Falcons extended the lead even further to 40-23 on a jumper by Antonio Watson (So./Raleigh, NC) in the second half. But Mansfield chipped away at its deficit and eventually pulled within 63-60 with 12 seconds left. Collins drained three of four free throw attempts to seal the win for the Falcons, who take on California (Pa.) University on Saturday, Nov. 12 at 6 p.m. in the Classic.

Melton added eight points for the Falcons. Matt Tamanosky powered Mansfield with 23 points and Jahyde Gardiner added 12 points.
