Gaskins' Three-Point Buzzer-Beater Gives Falcons 93-90 Men's Basketball Double OT Win Over Crosstown Rival Shaw

Box Score

RALEIGH, N.C. – Guard Anthony Gaskins (Jr./Greenville, NC) did it again.

The spectacular guard banked in a running buzzer-beating three-pointer to give Saint Augustine's University a thrilling 93-90 double overtime victory over crosstown rival Shaw University at packed Spaulding Gymnasium on Saturday, Feb. 13, 2016.

Gaskins finished with a season-high 29 points, none bigger than the game-winning three. His bucket gave the Falcons (5-3 Southern Division, 10-14 overall) a share of the Southern Division lead with Johnson C. Smith University with two games to go in the regular season. The Falcons also swept the Bears in the regular season for the first time since the 2009-10 season when current Head Coach MarQus Johnson was a Falcons' assistant coach.

In 2011, both teams played a two-overtime contest in Spaulding Gymnasium in which the Bears prevailed 85-84. Saturday's contest was even more thrilling, but the Falcons came out on top this time.

"This was the game to see if you love college basketball," Johnson said. "The people got their money's worth tonight. Both teams fought hard and it just came down to who had the ball last."

Gaskins hit a three-point buzzer-beater for the second weekend in a row. His deep, contested three-pointer at the buzzer gave the Falcons a 58-55 victory over Winston-Salem State University at home in Emery Gymnasium on Feb. 6, 2016.

His latest game-winning shot was just as difficult. Guard Julius Murphy (Soph./Goldsboro, NC) rebounded a missed free throw with 4.6 seconds left and passed the ball to Gaskins, who raced downcourt and fired a running three-pointer just before time expired. The ball banked off the glass and went through the nets, sparking a celebration including Falcons' players and fans in one corner of the gym.

"Ant has made big shots for us all year," Johnson said. "It's like he has ice water in his veins."

His three-pointer capped a 9-1 rally in the final 1:40 of the second overtime to erase an 89-84 deficit. The Bears, who attempted 45 free throws, missed three of four free throw attempts during that stretch. By contrast, the Falcons were 6-for-6.

Gaskins' trey was the biggest of several clutch shots by the 6-foot-1 guard. He drained a tough three-pointer with 10 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 73-73. The Bears' tip-in was waved off because time had expired, sending the contest into overtime.

Despite Gaskins heroics, the victory on Saturday was a team effort. Forward Quincy January (Soph./Atlanta, GA) added 27 points and 12 rebounds, including seven offensive rebounds, for his CIAA leading 13th double-double of the season. He entered the contest ranked 10th nationally in Division II in double-doubles. The sky-walking 6-7 forward wowed the crowd with numerous eye-popping dunks.

Forward Nick Moyer (Sr./Martinsville, VA) had 12 points and seven rebounds, including four crucial offensive boards. Guard Keith Crawford (Sr./Richmond, VA) chipped in 11 points and guard Nick Tennell (Port St. Lucie, FL) scored eight points, none bigger than his layup off Gaskins' miss at the buzzer to force a second overtime at 84-84. Forward Marquis Hines (Sr./Fayetteville, NC) scored six points and blocked three shots as he played outstanding defense.

The Falcons showed perseverance by winning in a tough environment despite foul trouble late in the game. The foursome of January, Moyer, guard Antonio Watson (Fr./Raleigh, NC) and Hines fouled out while Gaskins and Tennell each had four fouls. Head Coach Johnson was even whistled for a technical even though he did not make disparaging remarks to the official to draw the technical. But the Bears missed critical free throws late in the second overtime to set the stage for Gaskins' three-pointer.

The contest started slowly for the Falcons as they fell behind early. Down 28-20 with seven minutes left in the first half, the Falcons went on a 13-3 run including eight points in the last four minutes to end the half ahead 33-31. Moyer scored five points, and Gaskins and January each scored four points during the spurt.

After halftime, the lead swayed back-and-forth until Gaskins' game-winner. There were 13 ties and nine lead changes in the contest.

David Madol led the Bears (4-4 Southern Division, 11-15 overall) with 26 points and nine rebounds. Larry Richardson II added 20 points for the Bears, who shot 46.4 percent. The Falcons shot 44 percent and outscored the Bears 40-26 in the paint, thanks to January, Moyer and Hines. They also scored 20 points off 20 Bears' turnovers.

"It was a great team effort from the coaches to the guys off the bench," Johnson said. "Shaw is a good and tough team. Give them a lot of credit."

The Falcons return to Emery Gymnasium on Wednesday, Feb. 17, to host Livingstone College on Senior Night at 7:30 p.m. Seniors Crawford, Tennell, Moyer, Hines and forward Ty'Shaun Freeman (Plymouth, NC) will be honored before the game. This will be the last home game of the season for the Falcons.
