Falcons, Lady Falcons Host Livingstone in CIAA Basketball Doubleheader on Senior Night Wednesday (Feb. 17)

RALEIGH, N.C. – Saint Augustine's University will celebrate Senior Night when the Falcons and Lady Falcons host Livingstone College in a CIAA men's and women's basketball doubleheader on the Harvey D. Heartley, Sr. Court at Emery Gymnasium Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2016. The women's game begins at 5:30 p.m. followed by the men's contest at 7:30 p.m. This is the last regular-season home contest for the Falcons and Lady Falcons.

 

Ticket prices are $13 for general admission and $8.50 for faculty, staff, military personnel with identification (ID), visiting college students with ID and children ages 6 to 12. The doubleheader is free for Saint Augustine's University students with ID and children ages 5 and under.

Five men's student-athletes and three women's student-athletes will be honored between the men's and women's games. The men's seniors are guards Keith Crawford (Richmond, VA) and Nick Tennell (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) and forwards Marquis Hines (Fayetteville, NC), Nick Moyer (Martinsville, VA) and Ty'Shaun Freeman (Plymouth, NC). The women's seniors are guards Shanika Harris (Richmond, VA), LaKiya Rouse (Greensboro, NC) and Shelby Stokes (Cleveland, OH).

 

The Falcons (5-3 Southern Division, 10-14 overall) need a win against the Blue Bears to remain first in the Southern Division men's standings. They are currently tied with Johnson C. Smith University atop the division. The Blue Bears (3-5 Southern Division, 11-15 overall) are two games out of first place with two games remaining in the regular season.

 

The Falcons are led by the tandem of forward Quincy January (So./Atlanta, GA) and guard Anthony Gaskins (Jr./Greenville, NC). January averages a team-leading 16 points per game and a CIAA-leading 9.8 rebounds per game. The high-flying forward, known for his powerful dunks, is fourth in the CIAA in field goal percentage (59.2) and sixth nationally in Division II with 13 double-doubles. He ranks 10th in Division II in offensive rebounds per game (3.67) and free throw attempts (200).

 

Gaskins ranks second on the team in points per game (15.6) and first in making clutch shots. His buzzer-beating three-pointer in a 93-90 double overtime win over crosstown rival Shaw University on Saturday, Feb. 13, was his second in three games. The long-range sharpshooter, named CIAA Player of the Week and BOXTOROW National Player of the Week, is fourth in the CIAA in three-point baskets (54).

 

Forward Ty Newman leads the Blue Bears with a 17.8 scoring average. He ranks third in the CIAA in scoring for the Blue Bears, the two-time defending CIAA champions.

 

The Falcons have won five of their last six games to move into a first-place division tie. They rank third in the CIAA in scoring defense (70.8). The Blue Bears rank 11th in Division II in total rebounds.

 

The Falcons are looking to sweep the season series. They defeated the Blue Bears 66-64 in Salisbury, N.C., on Jan. 27.

 

The Lady Falcons (0-8 Southern Division, 3-21 overall) are paced by guard Sycoya Dorsey (Jr./Richmond, VA), who leads the team in points per game (15.4), rebounds per game (7.0), assists per game (1.8) and steals per game (1.9). She ranks second nationally in Division II in free throw attempts (207). Harris averages 10.8 points and ranks ninth in the conference in three-point field goals (30).

 

The Lady Blue Bears (4-4 Southern Division, 12-11 overall) are in a four-way tie for second place in the Southern Division. They are led by guards Amber Curtis and Ariana De'Jesus, who average 15.3 points and 15.0 points, respectively.
