Falcons Host Winston-Salem State In Key CIAA Men’s Basketball Matchup Saturday, Feb. 6 (Game Notes)

The Saint Augustine's University men's basketball team will host Winston-Salem State University on the Harvey D. Heartley, Sr. Court at Emery Gymnasium in Raleigh, N.C., on Saturday, Feb. 6, 2016, at 4 p.m.

 

Records

The Falcons are 8-13 overall, 3-8 in the CIAA and 3-2 in the Southern Division. The Rams are 11-11 overall, 5-6 in the CIAA and 4-1 in the Southern Division.

Ticket Prices

Ticket prices are $13 for general admission and $8.50 for faculty, staff, military personal with identification (ID), visiting college students with ID and children ages 6 to 12. The doubleheader is free for Saint Augustine's University students with ID and children ages 5 and under.

 

Story Line

The red-hot Falcons enter Saturday's contest on a three-game win streak. A victory would move the Falcons into a first-place tie in the Southern Division. The Falcons are tied for second while the Rams lead the division by one game.

 

Last Meeting

Forward Quincy January (So./Atlanta, GA) led the Falcons with 20 points and 10 rebounds in a 75-56 CIAA loss to Winston-Salem State at the Gaines Center in Winston-Salem, N.C., on Jan. 16, 2016. He also had three blocks and made 9 field goals on 15 attempts including several rim-rattling dunks. Guard Keith Crawford (Sr./Richmond, Va.) added 11 points, six assists and four rebounds for the Falcons. Guard Anthony Gaskins (Jr./Greenville, NC) contributed 10 points and guard Devin Derry (Fr./Acworth, GA) added nine points and five rebounds.

 

Last Meeting at Emery Gymnasium

Anthony Gaskins pumped in a career-high 35 points to spark the Falcons to an 86-71 CIAA runaway victory over Winston-Salem State on Feb. 9, 2015. Gaskins played a modest first half, scoring eight points on 3 of 7 shooting. He exploded in the second half with 27 points on 10 of 13 shots including 5 of 8 from three-point range. During a critical three-minute stretch, Gaskins made all four three-point attempts to take the steam out of the Rams early in the second half.

 

Last Game

Guard Anthony Gaskins (Jr./Greenville, NC) poured in 26 points and forward Quincy January added 19 points and 11 rebounds as the Falcons toppled Shaw University 71-67 for their third straight CIAA victory. The Falcons fell behind early but spurted ahead midway through the first half to go into halftime leading 42-34. The lead reached 13 points early in the second half on Gaskins' three-pointer, but the margin whittled to one after a Shaw free throw with a little over six minutes remaining. The Falcons finished the contest on a 12-9 run to outlast the Bears.

 

About the Falcons' Head Coach

MarQus Johnson is in his second season as the Falcons' head men's basketball coach. In his first season, Johnson coached guard Raheem Jolliffe to All-CIAA honors and forward Quincy January to CIAA Rookie of the Year honors. Johnson was elevated to head coach after two seasons as assistant men's basketball coach for the Falcons from 2012 to 2014. He was previously an assistant coach at Saint Augustine's University from 2008 to 2010. In the 2009-10 season, Johnson helped direct the Falcons to their second CIAA championship in school history. That squad advanced to the NCAA Division II Tournament and earned a national top 25 ranking.

 

Falcons Among CIAA Leaders On Defense

The Falcons rank second in the CIAA in points allowed per game (70.1).

 

Falcons Successful Against Rams At Home

The Falcons have won three of their last four games against the Rams at Emery Gymnasium, including an 86-71 pasting last season. They also handled the Rams 61-55 in the 2011-12 season and 63-61 in the 2012-13 season. The Falcons' lone loss during that stretch occurred in the 2013-14 season (62-59).

 

January Leads CIAA In Rebounding

Sophomore forward Quincy January (Atlanta, GA) leads the CIAA in rebounds per game (9.3). His 3.24 offensive rebounds per game rank 29th in Division II. He is fifth in the CIAA in blocks (22) and fourth in field goal percentage (60.1). January is the team's leading scorer with a 15.6 average. He is a Preseason All-CIAA pick who was the league's rookie of the year last season. The high-leaping forward has a CIAA-leading 10 double-doubles, which rank 14th nationally in Division II.

 

January Among Nation's Leaders In Free Throw Attempts

Quincy January ranks eighth nationally in Division II in free throw attempts (179).

 

Gaskins Scoring From The Perimeter

Preseason All-CIAA pick Anthony Gaskins (Jr./Greenville, NC) is picking up where he left off last season. He is the team's second-leading scorer with a 14.6 average despite missing four games due to injury. The Falcons' guard ranks sixth in the CIAA in three-pointers made (43).

 

Crawford Steady In The Backcourt

Senior guard Keith Crawford (Richmond, VA) is third on the team in points per game (9.6) and leads the team in assists per game (3.2). He is fourth on the team in rebounds per game (3.5). Crawford was named CIAA Player of the Week once this season.

 

About The Opponent

Guard Terrell Leach leads the Rams in points per game (14.9). Forward Rayvon Harris averages 10.6 points and forward Keith Armstrong averages 9.1 points and 7.1 rebounds. Armstrong ranks fifth in the CIAA in rebounds per game (7.1). C.J. Ford averages 1.5 assists per game for the Rams, who rank fifth nationally in Division II in free throw attempts and ninth in free throws made. James Wilhelmi is in his second season as Rams' Head Coach.
