Saint Augustine’s University Hosts Johnson C. Smith In Men’s Basketball Battle For First Place Wednesday, Feb. 10, at 7:30 p.m. (Game Notes)

The Saint Augustine's University men's basketball team will host Johnson C. Smith University on the Harvey D. Heartley, Sr. Court at Emery Gymnasium in Raleigh, N.C., on Wednesday, Feb. 10, 2016, at 7:30 p.m.

 

Records

The Falcons are 9-13 overall, 4-8 in the CIAA and 4-2 in the Southern Division. The Golden Bulls are 11-10 overall, 6-6 in the CIAA and 4-2 in the Southern Division.

Ticket Prices

Ticket prices are $13 for general admission and $8.50 for faculty, staff, military personal with identification (ID), visiting college students with ID and children ages 6 to 12. The doubleheader is free for Saint Augustine's University students with ID and children ages 5 and under.

 

Story Line

The red-hot Falcons enter Wednesday's contest in a three-way tie for first place in the Southern Division with Johnson C. Smith and Winston-Salem State University at 4-2, making this contest a crucial one against the Golden Bulls. This is the fourth of a four-game homestand for the Falcons, who are 3-0 in their previous three contests at Emery Gymnasium. The Falcons are riding a four-game win streak.

 

Last Meeting

Anthony Gaskins (Jr./Greenville, NC) scored a season-high 28 points for the Falcons, which nearly pulled off a big road win in a 78-76 CIAA loss to Johnson C. Smith University at Brayboy Gymnasium on Jan. 20, 2016. The Falcons almost overcame a 10-point deficit in the last seven minutes, but missed an open three-pointer on the wing as time expired.

The backcourt tandem of Raheem Jolliffe and Anthony Gaskins scored 19 points apiece for the Falcons in a 68-63 CIAA victory over Johnson C. Smith on the Harvey D. Heartley, Sr. Court at Emery Gymnasium on Jan. 21, 2015. Forward Quincy January (Fr./Atlanta, GA) added 16 points and 12 rebounds.

Guard Anthony Gaskins (Jr./Greenville, NC) buried a three-pointer at the buzzer as the Falcons edged Winston-Salem State 58-55 in a CIAA contest at Emery Gymnasium on Saturday, Feb. 6, 2016. Gaskins finished with 14 points for the Falcons including 2-for-4 three-point shooting. He also added five rebounds, four assists and four steals. Forward Quincy January (Soph./Atlanta, GA) led the Falcons with 19 points and 15 rebounds, his 11th double-double of the season which leads the CIAA. The rebounds tied a career-high for the high-flying sophomore. Forward Marquis Hines (Sr./Fayetteville, NC) added eight points on 4-for-6 shooting off the bench.

 

About the Falcons' Head Coach

MarQus Johnson is in his second season as the Falcons' head men's basketball coach. In his first season, Johnson coached guard Raheem Jolliffe to All-CIAA honors and forward Quincy January to CIAA Rookie of the Year honors. Johnson was elevated to head coach after two seasons as assistant men's basketball coach for the Falcons from 2012 to 2014. He was previously an assistant coach at Saint Augustine's University from 2008 to 2010. In the 2009-10 season, Johnson helped direct the Falcons to their second CIAA championship in school history. That squad advanced to the NCAA Division II Tournament and earned a national top 25 ranking.

 

Johnson Wins Second Straight CIAA Coach of the Week Honor

Falcons' Head Coach MarQus Johnson won his second straight CIAA Coach of the Week honor and third in his two-year head coaching career on Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2016. He guided the Falcons to a 2-0 record last week with victories over Shaw and Winston-Salem State. The Falcons defeated Shaw 71-67 and Winston-Salem State 58-55.

 

Gaskins Named CIAA Player of the Week

Anthony Gaskins (Jr./Greenville, NC) of the Falcons was named CIAA Men's Basketball Player of the Week on Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2016. Gaskins averaged 20 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals while shooting 43.8 percent from the floor, 53.8 percent from the three-point line and 83.3 percent from the free throw line in two victories last week. The long-range sharpshooter dropped a season-high 26 points and added five rebounds in a 71-67 win over crosstown rival Shaw University on Feb. 1. He then scored 14 points, including a spectacular buzzer-beating three-pointer, to lift the Falcons past Winston-Salem State University 58-55 on Feb. 6. The wins elevated the Falcons into a three-way tie for first place in the CIAA Southern Division standings.

 

Gaskins Named BRIC BOXTOROW Player of the Week

Anthony Gaskins (Jr./Greenville, NC) of Saint Augustine's University was named BRIC BOXTOROW National Collegiate Basketball Player of the Week on Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2016, for his outstanding performance in two victories last week. Gaskins will be featured on boxtorow.com as the BRIC BOXTOROW National Player of the Week and will also appear as guest on the national sports talk show FROM THE PRESS BOX TO PRESS ROW with host Donal Ware this week. BOXTOROW can be heard in the Triangle on Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. on The Buzz Sports Radio 620-AM/99.3-FM/96.5-FM, from 11 a.m.-12 p.m. on campus station WAUG-AM 750 and nationally from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. on SiriusXM Channel 142.

January Leads CIAA In Rebounding

Sophomore forward Quincy January (Atlanta, GA) leads the CIAA in rebounds per game (9.6). His 3.36 offensive rebounds per game rank 20th in Division II. He is sixth in the CIAA in blocks (23) and fifth in field goal percentage (59.7). January is the team's leading scorer with a 15.8 average, which ranks eighth in the CIAA. He is a Preseason All-CIAA pick who was the league's rookie of the year last season. The high-leaping forward has a CIAA-leading 11 double-doubles, which rank 11th nationally in Division II.

Quincy January ranks eighth nationally in Division II in free throw attempts (187).

 

Gaskins Scoring From The Perimeter

Preseason All-CIAA pick Anthony Gaskins (Jr./Greenville, NC) is picking up where he left off last season. He is the team's second-leading scorer with a 14.6 average despite missing four games due to injury. The Falcons' guard ranks sixth in the CIAA in three-pointers made (45).

 

Crawford Steady In The Backcourt

Senior guard Keith Crawford (Richmond, VA) is third on the team in points per game (9.5) and leads the team in assists per game (3.1). He is fourth on the team in rebounds per game (3.4). Crawford was named CIAA Player of the Week once this season.

Forward Stedmon Lemon ranks second in the CIAA in points per game (21.2) and leads the Golden Bulls in rebounds per game (6.9). Guard Diondre Pratt averages 16.7 points and 6.3 rebounds, and center Alandre Davis averages 10.8 points and 5.2 rebounds. Robert Davis averages 4.2 assists per game for the Golden Bulls, who rank fifth nationally in Division II in assists per game (18.8).
