Anthony Gaskins Scores 16 Points For The Falcons; Quincy January Posts Another Double-Double

RALEIGH, NC (Jan 19) – On Wednesday night, Anthony Gaskins (Sr./Greenville, NC) scored 16 points for Saint Augustine's University in a 63-56 CIAA men's basketball loss to Johnson C. Smith University at Emery Gymnasium.

Quincy January (Jr./Atlanta, GA) added 12 points and 13 rebounds and Kasey Bryant (Jr./Raleigh, NC) scored 10 points for the Falcons (1-1 Southern Division, 4-4 CIAA, 10-9 overall). The double-double was the ninth this season for January, who entered the contest ranked 12th nationally in the category.

Jquwan Ruffin (R-Fr./Ahoskie, NC) registered six points and Chris Melton (So./Richmond, VA) snatched six rebounds for the Falcons. D.J. Harrison (So./Winston-Salem, NC) had five points and five rebounds while Kenneth Collins (Jr./Clayton, NC) and Gaskins both dished out three assists.

Led by Bryant and January, the Falcons were in control early in the second half after an 11-0 run which turned a 37-36 deficit into a 47-37 lead. Bryant scored five points and January tacked on four points during the spurt.

But after a timeout, the Golden Bulls answered with an 11-0 run of their own to regain the lead at 48-47. The Falcons tied the score 48-48 on a Harrison free throw but the Golden Bulls scored seven straight points for a 55-48 lead with 6:07 remaining.

Two three-pointers by Gaskins got the Falcons within 57-54 but the Golden Bulls finished with a 6-2 spurt in the final 3:39 of a contest featuring two of the top defensive teams in the conference. The Falcons and Golden Bulls entered the contest ranked second and third, respectfully, in points allowed as both teams hold opponents to under 70 points per game.

Robert Davis scored 19 points and Gabon Williams and Aaron Adair both added 12 points for the Golden Bulls (1-1 Southern Division, 3-3 CIAA, 7-9 overall), who shot 50 percent including 55 percent in the second half. The Golden Bulls also made 58.3 percent of their three-point attempts.

By contrast, the Falcons made 35.7 percent of their shots including 32.1 percent in the final twenty minutes. They stayed close by outrebounding the Golden Bulls 38-28 including 17-5 on the offensive boards which led to a 17-8 edge in second-chance points.

Free throw shooting spoiled any chance of a comeback, however, as the Falcons made four of nine attempts in the second half including two of six in the final two minutes. For the contest, the Falcons were 10 of 19 for 52.6 percent.

The Golden Bulls took charge in the second half after a see-saw first half with 12 lead changes. January made sure the Falcons would be ahead at halftime when he flushed a two-hand dunk off a missed shot for a 32-28 lead with eight seconds remaining. The margin was 32-31 at the half after Williams of Smith knocked down a three-pointer from the corner before the horn sounded.

After six consecutive home games, the Falcons head crosstown to visit archrival Shaw University at Spaulding Gymnasium on Saturday, Jan. 21. Tip-off is 4 p.m.
