Box Score Quincy January Paces The Falcons With 20 Points and Nine Rebounds
RALEIGH, NC (Jan 21) – On Saturday, Quincy January (Jr./Atlanta, GA) recorded 20 points and nine rebounds for Saint Augustine's University in a 51-46 CIAA men's basketball loss to archrival Shaw University at Spaulding Gymnasium.
Anthony Gaskins (Sr./Greenville, NC) added eight points and Raydell Denis (Jr./St. Croix, Virgin Islands) had nine rebounds for the Falcons, who lost to the Bears for the first time in their last three meetings. The defeat also snapped the Falcons' two-game victory streak against their archrival at Spaulding Gymnasium.
January kept the Falcons (1-2 Southern Division, 10-10 overall) in contention against the Bears. He scored 14 points and pulled down six rebounds in the first half as the Falcons trailed 30-24 at halftime.
The high-flying forward led the Falcons with six points in the second half including a free throw to get his team within 43-42 with 4:07 left. The Bears (2-0 Southern Division, 8-9 overall) ended the contest with an 8-4 run for the victory.
Both teams shot under 40 percent in the low-scoring affair. The Falcons made 37.5 percent of their shots and the Bears hit 31.3 percent of their attempts. The Bears won the contest at the free throw line, making 16 of 23 attempts for 69.6 percent including 10 of 15 in the second half. The Falcons were 7 of 11 for 63.6 percent including 4 of 7 in the second half. The visitors were 2 of 5 from the charity stripe in the final 4:07 of the game.
The defeat overshadowed another fine defensive effort from the Falcons, who rank second in the CIAA in points allowed. The Bears point total is the lowest for a Falcons opponent this season, but the Falcons scored a season-low in the contest.
Joshua Cassady scored 13 points and David Madol added 12 points for the Bears, who led all but the game's early moments. Larry Richardson totaled 10 points for Shaw.
The Falcons return home for a CIAA Southern Division matchup against Livingstone College on Wednesday, Jan. 25. Game time is 7:30 p.m. at Emery Gymnasium.
