SAU Men's Basketball Edged By Livingstone 88-85 In Overtime

RALEIGH, NC (Jan 26) – On Wednesday, Jan. 25, Anthony Gaskins (Sr./Greenville, NC) pumped in 26 points and Quincy January (Jr./Atlanta, GA) added 17 points, a career-high 18 rebounds, three blocks and three steals, but the Falcons suffered a tough 88-85 CIAA men's basketball defeat in overtime to Livingstone College at Emery Gymnasium.

Gaskins drilled some big three-pointers down the stretch and January played a superb all-around game but it wasn't enough to eke out a win against a Southern Division foe. The Blue Bears knocked down 9 of 10 free throws in the extra session to fend off the Falcons including two free throws by Roger Ray with 11 seconds left for the final margin. The Falcons misfired on a three-pointer before time expired in overtime.

The Blue Bears (3-1 Southern Division, 7-12 overall) were 37 of 44 from the free throw line for 84.1 percent while the Falcons were 11 of 22 for 50 percent. The visitors hit eight consecutive free throws in the final minute of overtime.

The Falcons (1-3 Southern Division, 10-11 overall) recovered from a 58-50 deficit with 8:58 left in regulation to take a 65-63 lead on Gaskins' three-pointer with 5:28 on the clock. Leading 73-70 with 22 seconds left, the Falcons had a chance to put the game away but missed two free throws.

The Blue Bears tied the game at 73-73 on a three-point play with 12.2 seconds left in regulation. The Falcons missed a deep three-pointer and a wide-open follow shot under the basket as time expired, sending the game into overtime.

Kasey Bryant (Jr./Raleigh, N.C.) added 12 points and the trio of Anthony Cadogan (Fr./Queens, NY), Kenneth Collins (Jr./Clayton, NC) and Jquwan Ruffin (R-Fr./Ahoskie, NC) each scored seven points for the Falcons. Ray had 21 points for the Blue Bears including 13 points on free throws. He was 13 of 15 from the free throw line. Jimmy Wilson added 19 points, David Duncan scored 14 points and Eric Dortch-Jones registered 10 points for the Blue Bears.

Led by January, the Falcons outscored the Blue Bears 48-32 in the paint. January was 8 of 11 from the floor for the Falcons, who outshot the Blue Bears 45.9 percent to 38.7 percent. The Falcons also won the rebounding battle 50-40 including a 21-14 edge in offensive boards but the Blue Bears scored 21 points on 20 Falcon turnovers. The Falcons were outscored 62-21 in bench points but outscored the Blue Bears 12-6 in fast break points.

Gaskins scored 11 points and January added eight points and eight rebounds in the first half for the Falcons, who found themselves down 41-32 at halftime after leading early in the half. Ray scored eight first-half points for the Blue Bears.

Coaches from both teams wore tennis shoes in recognition of Coaches Vs. Cancer Suits & Sneakers Week. Both staffs participated in the event to help bring attention to the fight against cancer and raise awareness about the lifesaving mission of the American Cancer Society.
