SAU Rally Falls Short In Men's Basketball Loss To Barton

RALEIGH, N.C. (Nov. 18) – Saint Augustine's University nearly rallied from a 14-point second-half deficit in a 79-73 men's basketball loss to Barton College in the Mount Olive Pickle Classic at Kornegay Arena in Mount Olive, N.C., on Saturday.

The Falcons trailed 54-40 with 14:48 remaining in the second half, but a 19-7 run cut the deficit to 61-59 on a jumper by Rashad George (Redshirt Fr./Raleigh, NC) with 4:10 left. They got within two again at 75-73 with 19 seconds left on a basket by Tyre Gathright (Jr./Wilmington, NC), but the Bulldogs went 4-for-4 from the free throw line to hold off the Falcons.

Gathright led the Falcons in scoring for the second straight night. He was 10 of 13 from the floor including 2 of 4 from three-point range for 23 points. Kenneth Collins (Sr./Clayton, NC) scored 19 points including 4 of 8 three-pointers and George added 10 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Quinton Morrow (Jr./Burlington, NC) contributed seven points and four assists.

The Falcons lost despite shooting 53.6 percent including 57.1 percent in the second half. The Bulldogs (2-3 overall) shot 43.9 percent including 41.7 percent in the second half but made 18 of 21 free throw attempts for 85.7 percent in the final stanza. For the game, the Bulldogs were 21 of 24 from the charity stripe for 87.5 percent while the Falcons were 7 of 10 for 70 percent.

Michael Boykin led Barton with 20 points and Bobby Stenborg added 15 points. Isaiah Reddish chipped in 11 points for the Bulldogs.


The Falcons fell behind early in the game but regrouped to lead 28-25 on George's jumper. They were outscored 13-6 the remaining of the half to trail 38-34 at halftime. Collins scored nine points and Gathright added seven points in the first half.

The Falcons (0-4 overall) will host their home opener on Monday, Nov. 20, against Claflin University at Emery Gymnasium. Game time is 7 p.m.
