SAU Men's Basketball Falls 58-56 To Virginia Union

RALEIGH, N.C. (Nov. 25) – Kasey Bryant (Sr./Raleigh, NC) scored a season-high 18 points and added four assists and four rebounds for Saint Augustine's University in a 58-56 men's basketball loss to host Virginia Union University in the VUU Thanksgiving Classic at Barco-Stevens Hall on Saturday.

Bryant drilled a three-pointer with 55 seconds left to tie the score at 56-56, but Virginia Union scored on a layup with 25 seconds left and recorded a steal before time expired to win the contest. The Panthers improved to 2-4 overall while the Falcons dropped to 0-6 in the non-conference matchup between CIAA teams.

Tyre Gathright (Jr./Wilmington, NC) added 11 points and five assists, and D.J. Harrison (Jr./Winston-Salem, NC) finished with 11 points and nine rebounds for the Falcons, who shot 47.7 percent including 47.1 percent (8 of 17) behind the three-point arc. Kenneth Collins (Sr./Clayton, NC) chipped in nine points and five assists.

The back-and-forth contest featured four ties and six lead changes in the second half. The Falcons, trailing 30-29 at halftime, opened the final 20 minutes with an 8-1 run for a 37-31 lead.

After the Panthers tied the score at 39-39, neither team led by more than four points. Bryant hit two free throws to give the Falcons a 52-49 lead with 5:46 left, but the Panthers finished the contest with a 9-4 run for the win.

William Jenkins tallied 15 points and 10 rebounds, and Devin Moore added 11 points for the Panthers, who shot 40 percent from the floor and made 1 of 10 three-point attempts for 10 percent. But the Panthers held a huge scoring advantage in the paint (34-16) and connected on 17 of 23 free throw attempts for 73.9 percent while the Falcons made 6 of 8 free throw attempts for 75 percent.

The Falcons are back in action Sunday, Nov. 26, against Elizabeth City State University in the VUU Thanksgiving Classic. Game time is 2 p.m.
