Gathright Scores 24 In SAU Men's Basketball Win Over Elizabeth City State

RALEIGH, N.C. (Nov. 26) – Tyre Gathright scored 24 points as Saint Augustine's University toppled Elizabeth City State University 58-52 in the VUU Thanksgiving Classic at Barco-Stevens Hall in Richmond, Va., on Sunday.

The win was the first in seven games for the Falcons, who shot 52.8 percent. The Vikings, who made 36.4 percent of their shots, fell to 3-2 overall in the non-conference game between CIAA schools.

Gathright, who led both teams in scoring, was 8 of 13 from the floor including 4 of 6 behind the three-point arc. He also was 4 of 4 from the free throw line and snatched five rebounds.

D.J. Harrison (Jr./Winston-Salem, NC) added eight points and eight rebounds, and Kenneth Collins (Sr./Clayton, NC) scored eight points for the Falcons. Quincy January (Sr./Atlanta, GA), who missed Saturday's game against Virginia Union University due to injury, totaled seven points and nine rebounds, and Kasey Bryant (Sr./Raleigh, NC) dished out seven assists.

Behind 15 first-half points from Gathright, the Falcons went into halftime leading 25-18. The Falcons shot 66.7 percent in the second half to open a 50-33 lead with 6:25 left, but the Vikings pulled within two points at 54-52 with 1:24 remaining. The Falcons knocked down 4 of 5 free throw attempts to preserve the victory.

For the game, the Falcons made 13 of 17 free throw attempts for 76.5 percent while the Vikings connected on 7 of 15 free throw attempts for 46.7 percent. The Falcons also buried 7 of 15 three-point attempts for 46.7 percent compared to 5 of 21 three-point attempts for 23.8 percent for the Vikings.

Charles Woods paced the Vikings with 15 points and Aujameq Daniels added 13 points. John Maynor chipped in 11 points and four steals.

The Falcons are back on the road for the third consecutive game on Wednesday, Nov. 29, against CIAA foe Chowan University in a non-conference contest at the Helms Center in Murfreesboro, N.C. Game time is 7 p.m.
