Box Score RALEIGH, N.C. (Dec. 18) – Quincy January (Sr./Atlanta, GA) tallied 18 points and 16 rebounds and Tyre Gathright (Jr./Wilmington, NC) added 18 points as Saint Augustine's University pulled away in the second half to down Chowan University 71-58 at Emery Gymnasium on Monday for their third straight CIAA men's basketball win.
The victory was the Falcons' third at home in five days and place them atop the CIAA Southern Division at 3-0. They currently have the best conference record in the league.
Kasey Bryant (Sr./Raleigh, NC) pumped in 16 points and Rashad George (R-Fr./Raleigh, NC) had 10 points for the Falcons, who outscored the Hawks 38-29 in the second half on 56 percent shooting.
Leading 33-29 at halftime, the Falcons made four of their first five shots in the second half, including a three-pointer each from Gathright and George, to build a 44-31 lead. George scored eight points during the 11-2 Falcons' spurt to open the second half.
The Hawks closed within 46-39, but the Falcons pushed their lead to 15 at 58-43 on Bryant's three-pointer with 8:56 left. The Hawks managed to get within 61-52, but the Falcons finished the contest on a 10-6 run.
Robert Grubbs scored 17 points and Tim Hewett added 16 points for the Hawks (0-3 CIAA, 4-7 overall), who shot 38.6 percent for the contest. The Falcons held an opponent under 40 percent shooting for the third consecutive game.
The Falcons started the contest trailing 18-12 before making their move. They drilled three consecutive three-pointers – two by Kenneth Collins (Sr./Clayton, NC) and one by Bryant - to take a 21-20 lead. The score was tied 23-23 before the Falcons closed out the first half with a 10-6 spurt for a four-point halftime lead.
This was the Falcons' second victory over the Hawks this season. In their first meeting, the Falcons went on the road to stop the Hawks 68-64 in Murfreesboro, N.C. in a non-conference matchup on Nov. 29.
The Falcons (5-8 overall) will take a holiday break before visiting Belmont Abbey College in a non-conference game on Dec. 30. The game will take place in Belmont, N.C., at 2 p.m.
