RALEIGH, NC (Feb 11) – On Saturday, Anthony Gaskins (Sr./Greenville, NC) poured in 28 points as Saint Augustine's University topped crosstown rival Shaw University 66-59 in a CIAA men's basketball contest at packed Emery Gymnasium.

Kenneth Collins (Jr./Clayton, NC) added 16 points for the Falcons, who made 10 of 22 three-point attempts for 45.5 percent. Gaskins and Collins combined to hit 9 of 16 threes including a 4 of 4 shooting effort from Collins.


Quincy January (Jr./Atlanta, GA) recorded 13 points and 14 rebounds for his 12th double-double of the season. He entered the game ranked 15th nationally in Division II in the category.

January canned two free throws with four seconds left to seal the victory for the Falcons, who connected on 12 of 15 free throw attempts for 80 percent. The Falcons (2-6 Southern Division, 11-14 overall) swished eight straight free throws in the final 1:21 to maintain their lead after the Bears rallied from a 17-point deficit to get within 58-56.

The Falcons built a 56-39 lead in the second half on the third of three straight three-pointers by Collins, who scored 11 points in the half. The Bears (6-2 Southern Division, 12-12 overall), first in the Southern Division, then began their run before the Falcons held them off at the free throw line. The Falcons were 11 for 13 for 84.6 percent at the free throw line in the final 20 minutes.

Benji Bell scored 21 points for the Bears, who were limited to 32 percent shooting. DeAngelo Stephens-Bell and DeVaughn Kelsie each added 11 points. For the Falcons, Raynell Denis (Jr./St. Croix, Virgin Islands) grabbed seven rebounds.

Gaskins, who scored 15 first-half points, set the tone for the Falcons in the first half. He drilled a three-pointer for a 27-20 lead and later added a layup for a 31-20 margin late in the half. The Falcons entered halftime ahead 31-25.

In the second half, he buried the first two of five consecutive three-pointers by the Falcons. After the string of three-pointers - including three straight by Collins - the Falcons were up 17 points. Gaskins scored 13 points in the final stanza.

The Falcons, who ended a six-game losing skid, have won two straight games at home against their archrivals under Head Coach MarQus Johnson. They snapped the Bears two-game winning streak and held the Bears to their second-lowest scoring output this season. The Bears scored a season-low against the Falcons in a 51-46 win in the first meeting between both teams on Jan. 21.

The Falcons will visit Livingstone College in their last away game of the season on Wednesday, Feb. 15. The contest begins at 7:30 p.m. at New Trent Gymnasium in Salisbury, N.C.
