Box Score Quincy January Records 13th Double-Double Of The Season For The Falcons
SALISBURY, NC (Feb 16) – On Wednesday, Feb. 15, Quincy January (Jr./Atlanta, GA) finished with 16 points and 12 rebounds for Saint Augustine's University in a 70-61 CIAA men's basketball loss to Livingstone College at New Trent Gymnasium.
January recorded his 13th double-double of the season in the defeat. He entered the contest ranked 12th nationally in Division II in double-doubles. The high-leaping forward also leads the CIAA in rebounds per game.
The Falcons junior scored 11 points in the second half including six consecutive points to pull the Falcons within 52-47 after trailing by 19 early in the same half. The turning point of the game occurred seconds later when the Falcons were called for an intentional foul on a Blue Bears layup off a steal. The Blue Bears (6-3 Southern Division, 10-15 overall) made both free throws and scored on the ensuing possession for a 58-47 lead with five minutes remaining. After the Blue Bears scored six points on one possession, the Falcons got no closer than eight the remainder of the contest.
Kasey Bryant (Jr./Clayton, NC) added 12 points while Anthony Cadogan (Fr./Queens, NY) and Jquwan Ruffin (R-Fr./Ahoskie, NC) each scored nine points for the Falcons, who outscored the Blue Bears 34-30 in the second half. The Falcons shot 42.9 percent for the contest but were 18.8 percent behind the three-point line and 62.5 percent from the free throw line.
Cameron Burhannon led the Blue Bears with 21 points including all six points on the possession when the Falcons were whistled for the intentional foul. David Duncan added 11 points and Jimmy Wilson scored 10 points. The Blue Bears shot 42.4 percent including 41.7 percent behind the three-point arc. They made 50 percent of their free throw attempts.
Ruffin scored seven points and Cadogan had six points in the first half for the Falcons, who fell behind after holding an early lead. The Falcons jumped out ahead 12-7 on January's layup but the Blue Bears eventually built a 34-22 lead which increased to 40-27 by halftime.
The Blue Bears opened the second half like they ended the first. Their lead grew to 47-28 before January keyed a 19-5 run to trim the margin to five. After rebounding a Blue Bears miss, the Falcons had a chance to make the contest a one-possession game but the six-point swing on the Blue Bears steal changed the momentum and derailed the Falcons effort of pulling out a road win.
With the loss, the Falcons (2-7 Southern Division, 11-15 overall) are assured of the No. 6 Southern Division seed in the CIAA Tournament next week. They finish out the regular season at home against Fayetteville State University at Emery Gymnasium on Saturday, Feb. 18 at 4 p.m. This will be the last home game for seniors Anthony Gaskins (Greenville, NC) and Andre Stanley (Virginia Beach, VA).
