CHARLOTTE, NC (Feb 9) – On Wednesday, Feb. 8, Jquwan Ruffin (R-Fr./Ahoskie, NC) scored 17 points and Quincy January (Jr./Atlanta, GA) added 16 points and 10 rebounds for Saint Augustine's University in a 66-61 CIAA men's basketball loss to Johnson C. Smith University at Brayboy Gymnasium.

The 17 points were a career-high for Ruffin, who has scored in double figures the last three games. January, who entered the contest ranked 20th nationally in double-doubles, recorded his 11th this season.


January added three steals and Ruffin dished out five assists for the Falcons, who shot 42.6 percent from the floor. The Falcons outscored the Golden Bulls 23-16 in the paint and 22-5 in bench points.

Ruffin scored 14 points and Anthony Gaskins (Sr./Greenville, NC) scored all 13 of his points in the second half as the Falcons led 59-54 with six minutes left. But the Golden Bulls outscored the Falcons 12-2 the rest of the way including seven free throws in the final 1:09 of the contest.

Robert Davis scored a game-high 24 points for the Golden Bulls, who shot 41.7 percent from the floor. The Golden Bulls scored 26 points off a season-high 23 Falcon turnovers.

January kept the Falcons (1-6 Southern Division, 10-14 overall) in the contest in the first half. He scored 12 points including a three-point play with 1.5 seconds remaining to cap a 5-0 run and pull the Falcons within 31-29 at halftime.

Both teams are among the best in the league in defense. The Golden Bulls (3-4 Southern Division, 10-13 overall) and Falcons rank second and third, respectively, in points allowed.

After a three-game road stretch, the Falcons return home to host crosstown rival Shaw University at Emery Gymnasium on Saturday, Feb. 11. Tip-off is 4 p.m.
