SAU Hosts Crosstown Rival Shaw In Basketball Doubleheader Wednesday, Jan. 24 (Live Video and Live Stats)

RALEIGH, N.C. (Jan. 23) – Emery Gymnasium will be rockin' on Wednesday, Jan. 24, when Saint Augustine's University host crosstown rival Shaw University in a CIAA basketball doubleheader. Tipoff is 5:30 p.m. for the women and 7:30 p.m. for the men.

 

Tickets are $13 for general admission and $8.50 for faculty, staff, senior citizens, military personnel with ID, visiting college students with ID and children ages 6-12. The doubleheader is free for SAU students with valid ID and children ages five and under (one per paying adult). Due to limited capacity, high school coaches' passes will not be honored.

Both the Falcons and Bears are early contenders for the CIAA Southern Division men's title. The Falcons (1-1 Southern Division) have won seven of their last nine contests, and the Bears (2-0 Southern Division) are on a three-game win streak.

 

Tyre Gathright (Jr./Wilmington, NC) and Quincy January (Sr./Atlanta, GA) are the top contributors for the Falcons, who are 6-2 in the CIAA and 9-10 overall. Gathright is tied for fifth in the conference in points per game (16.6) and January leads the CIAA in rebounds per game (11.4) and field goal percentage (64.0) in addition to averaging double figures in points (13.6). January ranks sixth nationally in Division II in rebounds per game and Kasey Bryant (Sr./Raleigh, NC) ranks third in the CIAA in three-point field goal percentage (45.2).

 

The Bears (5-2 CIAA, 12-6 overall) are led by the trio of DeAngelo Stephens-Bell, Savon Goodman and DaVaughn Kelsie. Stephens-Bell ranks second (19.4), Goodman third (18.8) and Kelsie fourth (16.8) in the CIAA in points per game. Goodman ranks third in the conference in rebounds per game (9.6) and fourth in field goal percentage (57.9), and Kelsie leads all Division II players in three-point field goals per game (4.83).

 

As a team, the Bears lead the CIAA in points per game (84.3) and turnovers forced (18.1). The Falcons are the conference leaders in three-point field goals made (128) and rank second in three-point field goal percentage (37.4) while ranking third in field goal percentage (45.4).

 

The Lady Falcons (0-2 Southern Division, 1-7 CIAA, 4-13 overall) are looking for their first victory against the Lady Bears since 2010, a span of 16 games. Kaaliya Williams (So./Richmond, VA) is the top scorer for the Lady Falcons, averaging 13.6 points per game. Quiera Gilmore (R-So./Charlotte, NC) averages 8.8 points and Angela Caraballo (So./Richmond, VA) and Kelsee Arnold (Jr./Atlanta, GA) average 7.6 points and 7.4 points, respectively. The Lady Falcons rank second in the CIAA and 13th nationally in Division II in turnovers forced (23.1).

 

LaQuisha Taylor paces the Lady Bears (1-1 Southern Division, 2-5 CIAA, 5-14 overall) with an 18.4 scoring average, which is the second-highest in the conference. Lervencia Johnson-Tyler averages 13.2 points for the Lady Bears, who have four players scoring in double figures.

 

Wednesday's doubleheader is the first of two meetings between the schools this season. The women will play Feb. 16 at 6 p.m. and the men will clash Feb. 17 at 4 p.m. at Spaulding Gymnasium.
