Balanced Scoring Keys SAU Men's Basketball In 75-69 Win Over Livingstone

SALISBURY, N.C. (Jan. 28) – Saint Augustine's University used a balanced attack to down Livingstone College 75-69 in a CIAA men's basketball game at New Trent Gymnasium on Saturday, Jan. 27.

The win stopped a two-game losing streak for the Falcons (2-2 Southern Division, 10-11 overall), who are tied for third with Fayetteville State University in the Southern Division. Both teams square off at Emery Gymnasium in the first of two meetings on Saturday, Feb. 3, at 4 p.m.


Four players scored in double figures for the Falcons, who shot 50.9 percent including 46.7 percent behind the three-point arc. The trio of Kasey Bryant (Sr./Raleigh, NC), Tyre Gathright (Jr./Wilmington, NC) and Kenneth Collins (Sr./Clayton, NC) scored 14 points apiece while Quincy January (Sr./Atlanta, GA) registered 12 points and 11 rebounds. D.J. Harrison (So./Winston-Salem, NC) totaled eight points and six rebounds.

The Falcons broke a 54-54 tie with a 21-15 run in the final 6:20 of the contest. Collins keyed the Falcons' spurt with two consecutive three-pointers for a 62-54 lead with 5:03 remaining. He later grabbed a rebound off a missed free throw and scored a layup for a 66-59 lead with 3:19 on the clock.

After two free throws by the Blue Bears, Harrison scored a layup and Gathright canned two free throws to stretch the Falcons' lead to 70-61 with 1:39 remaining. The Blue Bears (1-3 Southern Division, 6-9 overall) got within seven points three times but Rashad George (Fr./Raleigh, NC) iced the game with a free throw for a 75-67 lead with 11.6 seconds left.

The Falcons shot 55.2 percent and scored 22 points in the paint in the second half over the taller Blue Bears. Overall, the Falcons outscored the hosts 32-18 in the lane.

The tone was set early as the Falcons never trailed, opening a 16-4 lead in the first five minutes. The Blue Bears came back to tie the score at 20-20 but the Falcons went on a 15-9 spurt in the final 10 minutes of the half. A three-pointer by Bryant with 1:27 left gave the Falcons a 35-29 halftime lead as they held the Blue Bears scoreless in the final 2:36 of the first half. The Falcons shot 46.4 percent in the opening stanza.

Roger Ray scored 27 points for the Blue Bears, who made 39.7 percent of their shots. Cameron Burhannon and Malik Smith each scored 13 points.

Saturday's game against Fayetteville State is the first of three straight home contests for the Falcons, who will play four of their last six regular-season matchups at Emery Gymnasium. They host Livingstone in the regular-season home finale on Feb. 21.
