RALEIGH, N.C. (Feb. 10) – Tyre Gathright (Jr./Wilmington, NC) scored 15 points to lead three double-figure scorers for Saint Augustine's University, but a late spurt by Johnson C. Smith University hurt the Falcons in a 72-61 CIAA men's basketball loss at Emery Gymnasium on Saturday.
Kenneth Collins (Sr./Clayton, NC) added 13 points and Kasey Bryant (Sr./Raleigh, NC) registered 10 points for the Falcons, who fell to third place in the Southern Division standings at 4-3. Ishmael Baldwin (Jr./Kinston, NC) had nine points and six rebounds and Quincy January (Sr./Atlanta, GA) finished with seven points and eight rebounds as he reached the 1,000-rebound career milestone on Senior Day. Before the contest, January, Collins and Bryant were recognized along with three women's basketball and two cheerleading senior student-athletes.
The Falcons (12-12 overall) kept pace with the first-place Golden Bulls throughout the contest. The hosts trailed 51-49 with 7:36 remaining in the second half but the Golden Bulls (7-0 Southern Division, 17-7 overall) closed out with a 21-12 run to get the win.
The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for the Falcons, who were 9 of 18 behind the three-point stripe for 50 percent. The Falcons lead the CIAA in three-point field goal percentage.
Robert Davis scored 20 points and Roddric Ross added 14 points as four Golden Bulls scored in double figures. The Golden Bulls made 17 of 23 free throw attempts for 73.9 percent.
The first half started well for the Falcons, who opened a 13-6 first-half lead. A run by the Golden Bulls pushed them ahead 29-20 before the Falcons made a comeback late in the half. Gathright capped a 10-0 run with a jumper to put the Falcons up 30-29 before the Golden Bulls scored in the closing seconds for a 31-30 halftime lead. The Falcons trailed the entire second half but the margin stayed between one and eight points until the Golden Bulls went on their final run.
After three consecutive home games, the Falcons take on crosstown rival Shaw University at Spaulding Gymnasium in Raleigh, N.C., on Saturday, Feb. 17. Tipoff is 4 p.m.
