SAU Men's Basketball Upends Fayetteville State 75-53

RALEIGH, N.C. (Feb. 3) – Tyre Gathright (Jr./Wilmington, NC) scored 22 points as Saint Augustine's University shot a season-high 58.5 percent to rout Fayetteville State University 75-53 in a CIAA men's basketball contest at Emery Gymnasium on Saturday.

Quincy January (Sr./Atlanta, GA) added 16 points and seven rebounds for the Falcons, who won their second straight game. The Falcons (3-2 Southern Division, 11-11 overall) are tied for second with Shaw University in the Southern Division after entering the game tied for third with the Broncos. They are two games behind division leader Johnson C. Smith University with five regular-season games left.


The Falcons shot an astounding 64.3 percent in the second half to roll over the Broncos after leading 33-23 at halftime. They led by more than 20 points in the second half including 28 points at 75-47 on a basket by Rashad George (Fr./Raleigh, NC) with 50 seconds left in the game. The 22-point victory was the second-largest margin for the Falcons this season.

Ishmael Baldwin (Jr./Kinston, NC) had 12 points and five rebounds for the Falcons, who outscored the Broncos 44-16 in the paint. George scored eight points and D.J. Harrison (So./Winston-Salem, NC) and Kasey Bryant (Sr./Raleigh, NC) each chipped in seven points.

January is six rebounds away from reaching the 1,000-rebound career milestone. He is 25 points shy of scoring 1,500 points in his spectacular four-year career.

Willie Gilmore scored 15 points for the Broncos (2-3 Southern Division, 6-15 overall), who shot 41.9 percent from the floor. Denzell Hosch and Jerimiah Pope added 11 points and 10 points, respectively, as the Broncos were held to their second-lowest point total this season.

The Falcons continue a three-game home stretch on Wednesday, Jan. 7, against Winston-Salem State University at Emery Gymnasium at 7:30 p.m. In the first meeting Jan. 13, the Falcons won 74-65 in Winston-Salem, N.C.
