SAU Men's Basketball Visits Regionally-Ranked Virginia State Wednesday (Jan. 15)

RALEIGH, N.C. (Jan. 14) – After four consecutive home games to open the New Year, Saint Augustine's University heads to Ettrick, Va., to take on regionally-ranked Virginia State University at the VSU Multipurpose Center on Wednesday, Jan. 15. Tipoff is 7:30 p.m.

The last time the Falcons faced a regionally-ranked team, they won easily at home. SAU defeated then No. 6 Glenville State College 103-82 on Jan 3. The Trojans enter Wednesday's game ranked
10th in the D2SIDA Atlantic Region Poll.


The Falcons (5-9 overall) have improved immensely since falling to the Trojans 71-59 on Dec. 16, 2019 that counted in the conference standings. In their last four games, the Falcons are 3-1 and were within earshot of pulling out a comeback win in a 90-86 defeat to Livingstone College at home on Monday, Jan. 13. Karaan Clemonts (Jr./Weldon, NC) scored 26 points for the Falcons, including 20 of SAU's final 29 points.


SAU, averaging 90.2 points on 52 percent shooting in its previous four contests, is paced by a balanced attack. Gary Jefferson (Jr./Baltimore, MD) is the Falcons' scoring leader with a 13.9 average followed by Jalen Gaddy (Sr./Raleigh, NC) at 13.3 points per game, Clemonts at 9.6 per game and Donte Edwards (So./Durham, NC) at 9.3 per game.


Virginia State (11-5 overall) claimed victories in its last two games, including an 85-80 road win at Winston-Salem State University on Jan. 9. Andrew Corum paced five double-figure scorers with 17 points in the triumph.


The Trojans' top scorer is Francis "B.J." Fitzgerald, who averages 12.7 points. He is one of six players averaging over 10 points. Corum and Armond Griebe are among the CIAA's top 10 rebounders. The Trojans lead the CIAA in field goal percentage offense (48.7) and defense (40.9).

The away game against VSU is the first of three straight for the Falcons, who head to Bowie State University on Jan. 20 and Livingstone College on Jan. 22.
