SAU Men's Basketball Hosts Virginia Union Monday (Jan. 6)

RALEIGH, N.C. (Jan. 5) – One of the conference's top three-point shooting teams squares off against one of the CIAA's top defenses when Saint Augustine's University hosts Virginia Union University in a non-conference men's basketball contest between league foes at Emery Gymnasium on Monday, Jan. 6. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

Tickets are $13 for general admission and $8.50 for senior citizens, military personnel with valid ID, faculty, staff, visiting college students and children ages 6-12 as part of a doubleheader. The contest is free for SAU students and children ages 5 and under per one paying adult.

Live video and live stats are on saintaugfalcons.com, the official athletic website of Saint Augustine's University. Live video also is on the CIAA Sports Network (theciaasn.com).

The Falcons (3-8 overall) are coming off a big win over regionally-ranked Glenville State College, beating the Pioneers at their own up-tempo game in a 103-82 home win Friday, Jan. 3. SAU has earned a reputation as one of the league's premier three-point shooting squads under Head Coach MarQus Johnson, and this season is no different. They are tied for third in the CIAA in shooting percentage behind the arc (37.8).

Gary Jefferson (Jr./Baltimore, MD), averaging 13.8 points, is connecting on 48.6 percent from three-point land. Donte Edwards (So./Durham, NC) is making 44 percent of his threes and leading scorer Jalen Gaddy (Jr./Raleigh, NC) is making 36.5 percent behind the arc. Gaddy averages 14.1 points for the Falcons.

Rashad George (Jr./Raleigh, NC) has fewer attempts than his teammates mentioned but has the highest three-point percentage on the team (69.2).

The Falcons' three-point shooting prowess bodes well against Virginia Union, which ranks last in the CIAA in three-point defense. Teams are shooting 40.4 percent behind the arc against the Panthers, but interior defense is their calling card. VUU (9-4 overall) ranks second in the CIAA and 14th nationally in field goal percentage defense (40.5). The Panthers also rank fifth nationally in blocked shots (5.5 bpg) and 18th in the country in forcing turnovers (17.8).

Offensively, Terrell Leach is the Panthers' scoring threat. Leach leads the CIAA in scoring (21.3 ppg) and three-pointers made per game (3.4). He ranks sixth in three-point shooting (33.6) and assists (2.9 apg) in the conference. Jordan Peebles averages 12.8 points and ranks second in the CIAA in field goal percentage (60.4) in addition to ranking fifth in rebounding (8.4 rpg).

After Monday's clash, both teams will meet again in a conference game in Richmond, Va., on Feb. 3.
