Lady Falcons Fall In CIAA Basketball Opener

RALEIGH, N.C. – Saint Augustine's College had four players score in double figures, but the Lady Falcons lost 68-57 to Virginia State University in their CIAA basketball opener on Saturday (Nov. 21) in Emery Gymnasium.

 

The loss dropped the Lady Falcons to 1-1 overall and 0-1 in the CIAA. The Lady Trojans stayed unbeaten at 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the CIAA.

 

Ariel Brown (Jr./Cherry Hill, N.J.) led the Lady Falcons with 13 points. Both Allison Sikes (Jr./Richmond, Va.) and Scharlawn Hubbard (Fr./Akron, Ohio) added 12 points and LeKiesha White (Jr./Richmond, Va.) chipped in 10 points for the Lady Falcons, who shot 32 percent and committed 36 turnovers. Jalessia Davis (Fr./Ridgecrest, La.) yanked down 13 rebounds.

 

The Lady Falcons were missing forward Keyona Bryant, last season's CIAA rookie of the year. Bryant sat out with an ankle injury.

 

Rhon'Neisha Taylor of the Lady Trojans led all scorers with 16 points. Morgan McGill added nine points and eight rebounds, and Betty Appiah had eight points and 14 rebounds for the Lady Trojans, who shot 35 percent and turned the ball over 31 times but outrebounded the Lady Falcons 56-41.

 

The Lady Falcons play their third straight home game Monday (Nov. 23) when they host Virginia Union University at Emery Gymnasium. The game starts at 5:30 p.m.
