ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. – Keyona Bryant (So./Springdale, Md.) scored 22 points for Saint Augustine's College on 9 of 13 shooting, but Elizabeth City State University staved off a second-half Lady Falcon rally for a 58-52 CIAA basketball win on Saturday (Dec. 5) at R.L. Vaughan Center.
Allison Sikes (Jr./Richmond, Va.) added 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Lady Falcons, who dropped to 3-3 overall and 2-2 in the CIAA. The Lady Falcons shot 37 percent for the game and committed 34 turnovers to offset 14 steals.
Kenyatta Gill led the Lady Vikings (5-2 overall, 2-2 CIAA) with 16 points and 11 rebounds, and Kearah Jefferys almost recorded a triple-double off the bench with 12 points, 10 assists and eight steals. Tiffany Gadsden added 10 points for the Lady Vikings, who shot 33 percent but recorded 20 steals.
The Lady Falcons trailed 25-13 at halftime but opened the second half with 11 straight points to pull within one. The contest was close from that point but the Lady Vikings prevailed in the end.
Bryant scored eight points and Sikes added five points in the first half for the Lady Falcons. The 13 points were the lowest in the first half this season for the Lady Falcons, who shot 22 percent.
The Lady Falcons stayed within striking distance, however, because of 30 percent first-half shooting by the Lady Vikings. Gill led the Lady Vikings with eight points and five rebounds in the first half.
The Lady Falcons take an 11-day break before visiting Benedict College in Columbia, S.C., on Dec. 16. Game time is 5:30 p.m. The Lady Vikings take a 12-day break before they travel to face Washington Adventist University in Takoma Park, Md., at 6:00 p.m.
