RALEIGH, N.C. – Keyona Bryant (So./Springdale, Md.) had 26 points and 14 rebounds to lead Saint Augustine's College over Livingstone College 74-67 Friday at Emery Gymnasium for the CIAA Western Division women's basketball title.
The division crown is the first since 1993 for the Lady Falcons (18-9 overall, 14-6 CIAA, 8-2 Western Division), who finished the regular season on a six-game winning streak. It is also the first time both the Saint Augustine's College men's and women's teams have won division championships the same season. The Falcons clinched the men's title against Fayetteville State on Thursday.
Bryant, who was named to the All-CIAA team along with teammate Allison Sikes (Jr./Richmond, Va.) Friday for the second straight year, shot 11 of 17 from the floor. LeKiesha White (Jr./Richmond, Va.) added 14 points and Eliezer Iceson (Sr./Harlem, N.Y.) grabbed 12 rebounds in her last game at Emery Gymnasium. Iceson and fellow senior Rudeesha Reese (Teaneck, N.J.) were honored after the game on Senior Night.
Montiya Harrison scored 17 points to lead four double-figure players for the Lady Blue Bears (10-16, 6-13 CIAA, 4-5 Western Division). Kelcyn Manurs, the CIAA rookie of the year, scored 16 points and Elicia Gilliam-Washington and Khalia Boston both scored 11 points.
The Lady Falcons outrebounded the Lady Blue Bears 54-41 leading to 21 second-chance points. It proved to be the difference in a close contest.
The Lady Falcons, who have won five divisional titles, will be the No. 3 seed in the CIAA Tournament, which starts Tuesday.
